I'm using a p3 450 slot1 katmai right now and was wondering how a duron 700 would compare in gaming ? Would they be about the same, or would the duron be significantly faster?

[edit]
I upgraded my system to a duron 700. Just for reference, here are my sisoft sandra scores:

P3 450 @ 550 w/abit be6 & 512mb sdram

assuming you have at least a geforce ddr level video card, the duron would be significantly faster.
aside from gaming, the duron would be significantly faster in everything

I have a P3 450 MHz processor and it absolutely flys. I put in a lot of RAM (384 MB) and a good GeForce 2 GPU. However, a 700 MHz Duron will beat this particular P3 for a few reasons. It's a stripped down Athlon, and therefore it has

1. A better FPU, which means it's faster for running mainstream applications,
2. A higher 200 MHz FSB speed, which is great for gaming, and
3. More on chip cache memory than the 450 MHz P3, which translates into more speed.

I still love my 450 P3, it's been flying for over two years now. But unfortunately it can't compete with a 700 MHz Duron.

I made the switch from my pIII 450 to the Duron 700, and noticed a large preformace deficit even with 256MB of additional Ram. Video was less than appealing and rather broken. I attribute this to the 192KB of on chip cache of the Duron as opposed to the 512kb off chip cache of the PIII. I was so dissappointed with the change that had I not purchased my 1.2 T-bird, I would have gone back to the PIII... boy was I suprised.... and your video card will make a huge diff in gaming....

Not to mention the 700 even 600 is significantly faster on a crappy board - pcchips when compare to a P3 450 on a soyo 6BA+4 or P3BF. I saw the different in both board compare to 600. A definite yes provides that you have a good vid card.

Could the large performance deficit contributed by not reformat the drive and some drivers problem? Because as fas as I know the off chip L2 cache running slowing than the die L2 of the Duron, effectively more than compensate for the lost of space. And I doubt the FC-P3 have 512Kb L2 cache either I think it is 256kb. Correct me on this if I'm wrong.
