How does a FlatTax with an exemption hurt the poor?

I love the "FlatTax" proposals as a perfect example of how people's ignorance and prejudices can be preyed upon to compel them to act outside of their own best interest.

Rush, Hannity and the other republican mouthpieces have been pushing this idea with a catchy name for a while now. All it is is a gigantic tax cut for the rich, and a gigantic tax increase on everyone else. That's it. That's the entirety of the idea, and they've used some insidious methods to sell it...

Do me a favor, picture a welfare recipient in your mind... Is it an overweight black woman with several dirty children living in a free house, talking on her free cellphone, and driving a nicer car than yours? That's not reality, that's the image the propaganda sells in order to make lower-middle-class white people seriously consider the "FlatTax", without stopping to consider how badly it would hurt them. It's all bought and paid for by political action groups sponsored by wealthy folks trying to get the laws changed in their favor, and every time I read some impassioned tirade from a college kid on AT about how we all should pay our fair share and pull ourselves up! I slap my forehead because they don't realize they're putting the gun straight into their own mouth.

This is exactly right, and this is called people who live in a bubble.. who have not even seen the real world, and what is actually out there. You know, the little family who go to work and come home everyday, and never see those poor folk, who suffer, but only buy the crap that is sold on the TV, and listen to the shit on the radio. They think that is the real world. Because they would never step one toe outside their comfort zone into the real world to get to know real people who live in the poor areas, and who live in these dire circumstances.
