How does it look in a RAID 1 when one drive fails

I am running a mirrored RAID setup right now, and I was just wondering, out of curiosity what it would look like if (when) one of the drive fails. It is an onboard RAID chip, Abit AT7 to be exact, I was just wondering if one fails how it looks, and what steps I would need to take then to put another drive in there and then how to make that drive a mirror pair.

In addition, I was wondering if I could just break the mirror pair, for instance if I wanted one drive for another computer. And what I would need to do to break that pair. Thanks for the info guys.

It should notify you of a failed array when you boot up and then give you a chance to press F4 or ctrl-s to enter the RAID utility. Then you can rebuild the array or delete the array if you want to pull the other hard drive out. Once the array is deleted you should be able to boot normally from whichever hard drive you leave in.

This thread is directly relevant.

The long and short of it is this: you need to be running the little system tray utility that monitors your Raid 1 array while in Windows to get logging features and notification messages if any errors occur.

But other than that, any problems will be caught on boot. If a drive has failed, the Raid BIOS will inform you of the error and give you two options:
1. continue booting normally with the 1 working drive
2. replace the defective drive and rebuild the mirror in the background

ok thanks...so as I understand it, if one fails it will give me an option to replace the drive, and then there is a "re-mirror" option. It's not very important, but is there a process of re-mirroring that takes like 1 hour while one drive mirrors to the blank drive. I'll see if I can find it in the AT thread.
