On a serious note, getting to interact with superiors in a social environment is an absolute "can't miss" opportunity for anyone in their 20s or 30s.

Right or wrong, managerial decisions often take into account factors other than performance. I have found myself doing it, and I know for a fact I have received treatment that is different than more experienced or tenured employees because I hit golf balls with the boss after work on a Friday.

My last employer would promote the clueless idiots who sucked up and back stabbed over anyone else.

Most employers are like the above, whether they mean to be or not. You can play the game, or you can seriously tone down your hopes of advancement within that company.

My last employer promoted someone far less qualified over me earlier this year. I gave the CIO an ultimatum, they wouldn't meet my demands, and I basically told them to go fuck themselves as I took a new job for 70% more money. That's how you play the game.

Nicely done.

70% wtf? And I thought my 50% was crazy.

You were either grossly, disgustingly underpaid or been long overdue for a new job that also move you up.

I was underpaid but also caught a really lucky break and everything fell into place.

I did say "advancement within that company," ideally we could all do what you did. Most people aren't half that lucky, so we suck it up until we can either find or make our own luck.

I know what you said, but I'm not sure you understood the point behind my story. The point was that I think people don't value themselves or their skills enough and tend to hang on to their companies rather than explore other possibilities. I've never been one to suck up and I despise company social events, so I'm not going to force myself to do things which are so out of character for me when: 1) in all likelihood, it really won't help and 2) I have the skills to back my talk up and can get another job with little effort.

I really wouldn't worry about going, but I'm not a twitchy type A who worries about stupid crap like that. If you work hard and do a good job, you'll be fine. Whether you dance on a table at a Christmas party or not isn't really going to affect your career, IMO.

It is pathetic, but many companies take these things seriously and judge you if you don't go. My philosophy was that I'd attend an event if it were during business hours (last company had Xmas parties during the day) but if they were on my own time, I wouldn't go. One company had formal Christmas parties where you were expected to wear a suit or tux and I never went to crap like that.

This. It is not uncommon to work 60-70 hours a week so my personal time is important to me. This years party was after work hours and about 25 miles away so when asked if I was going the answer was "nope!". Even the owners have not been at the last few parties so no worries there, besides their offices are just down the hallway from mine and I interact with them almost every day so who cares what anyone else thinks.

i believe i read in a previous post of yours, but didn't you go from being an employee of a company to a contractor position?

that is extremely uncommon around here, and i would NEVER work at a place that required that type of time heh. unless i guess it was my own business. but if that was the case, it'd be my own party i'm throwing and hell yeah i would be there!

hell working more than 40 hours around here is extremely uncommon, and if it was the norm, i'd quickly be looking for a new job.

If you are going based on fear, then don't go no matter what (unless you'll get fired and starve, then you should suck it up and go).

They cancelled our christmas party this year, lack of funds, but they had a christmas lunch during work hours for whoever was working that day, I wasn't working, so I didn't go. But if they had done the real christmas party I would have been there for sure.

Just remember the more alcohol you consume, the more management will realize what a badass you are and respect you more. Dancing on the tables and hitting on the receptionists is also a plus.

I don't go and my bosses don't care. I see enough of these people during the year, the last thing I want to do is see them drunk and dancing.

Now, I work at a Fortune 150 company, so it's probably not noticeable that I'm not there, but my bosses and peers are well aware that I don't go. Most of my peers don't either. Oh, and it's not held against me.

It really depends on the party. Our party is quite large and is just a big open bar and buffet, so nobody would know or care if someone showed up or not. I like it that way; can go in, grab some grub, a few drinks, say hi to the people you want to then leave without any problems.

Some of the other office Christmas parties I have been to (with friends and family) they almost take attendance. Hard to skip out on those ones unless you have a very good excuse.

Correct. The money was too good to pass up plus I work from home and don't have to deal with any corporate BS like team building exercises, work parties, etc. I also had the option of being provided benefits but going on my wife's benefits was much, much cheaper. It wouldn't bother me if I were a contractor the rest of my career.

I worked for a major sports organization and even with their awesome benefits, I still come out way ahead in my new job. I'm also getting experience as a consultant, which will help me tremendously.

Some places I've worked there was alot of comraderie and it was a pleasure to party with co-workers after hours.

This job is not one of them. Won't go and don't care how it looks.

Yep

Where I'm at right now people that do nothing get promoted raises, while people that bust their ass become the peasants/treated like crap/2nd class citizens.

Shit is backwards

At my last job, the only negative thing they could say about me was: "You need to socialize with your coworkers more." In this case, he was referring to another group in another building that had completely different responsibilities and was composed of incompetent idiots. That kind of "feedback" was all the confirmation I needed that the manager was an incompetent boob.

EDIT: To be clear, that was on my last review. I was speechless at the level of stupidity.

Depends on the corporate culture. If it's a tightknit company where everybody is friends outside of work, it may reflect badly.

At my company, everyone is professional and works well together, but there isn't that kind of friendship, so skipping company events isn't even noticed.

Being speechless is simply part of job now days (it seems).

I can come up with COUNTLESS stories like above. The worst part is that lot of them are simply fabricated and pulled out of ass/baseless.

One just has to accept that people (especially those in the upper management) are fucking stupid.

It's pathetic but I've seen it at many places.

What's even more frustrating is that I've seen/known many people that have SHITTY job that have more brains than some of these "educated" Corporate idiots.

At this point, I just laugh. It's the only thing that keeps me sane.

Ehh, go to the party, the only time to not go to the party is if you are busy working on something critical to the needs of the business.
