How does one make prints of widescreen digital images?

I thought this would be fairly easy. My friend is trying to print many of our recent travel pictures, of which we took using the widescreen mode on our Canon 800 IS. Form what she tells me, everyone requires that the shots get cropped to fit 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc.

Is there a proper print ratio, and if so, where can I get them?

humm you should be able to print say a 5x9 on a 8x10 sheet of paper, just about any place

http://www.mpix.com/ has a huge varity of printing options, you might have to rezise some of your shots to fit but it should be doable without any major cropping

Can I just print a normal 5x9? Is that the standard size for widescreen prints (ala 4x6)?

EDIT:

I don't see a 5x9, but I do see a 6x9. Is that the one I'm looking for?

i was just being generic, theres no reason they cant print a smaller imageon a large sheet of paper is what i was getting at

IDK what the standard wide screen image size is, i dont shoot in it, IMO its kinda silly

6x9 is a 2:3 ratio like a film negative

I see. So then I would go to a print shop or whatnot and cut them myself?

As for why I shoot in it, well, that would be because my Macbook, my 2005FPW, and my HDTV are all 16x9 (or 10). I don't know why I would ever shoot in a normal 4x3 mode.

You would shoot in 4:3 because you can still crop to wide format. The only disadvantage is the files would be bigger if you shot 4:3.

The biq question is where does one find 'reasonably' priced frames for these prints

mpix.com or some other online printers. I just printed a nice 10X20 shot I did of my daughters school and her 350 classmates.
