I have a 700mhz PIII laptop for work and there are two other Laptops also 700mhz PIII I could set RC5 on. Just I was wondering, how does RC5 go with Laptops, about heat and about battery power.

Czar,

The client will cause a pretty large heat increase in the laptop while running. As far as the battery operation, I think you can set the client to turn itself off while the laptop is on battery power. My gateway 300 Celeron runs hot, but only because the Fan quit on it....Still cracks 24/7 though and no problems....Hot on the bottom, but no problems

Good Luck

13 Dell Lattitudes, currently 24/7, no problems. ~15 Gateways some 24/7, some not, they run hot but OK. Of course they ran hot even without RC5.

If you are concerned about heat, there is an option you can turn on in the client config that will pause the client if a temperature threshhold is met. Here is what my DNETC.INI file looks like for the laptop settings:

[triggers]
restart-on-config-file-change=yes
pause-on-no-mains-power=yes
pause-on-high-cpu-temp=yes
cpu-temperature-thresholds=115F

It is set to pause on battery power, and if the monitored temp of the laptop hits 115F, the client will pause until the temp falls below 80% of the 115F. This is configurable, and you can use Celcius too. Start up the client config and look for these options, select them, and there is a note on how to use the option, and the parms.

So far, I haven't found any of them pausing because of the temp threshhold.

I have ran it on one dell p3 500 for a few weeks now and just put another 3 on it friday. They are all stacked on top of one another and run HOT, but no problems yet. Feels like there is a heater vent under my desk though hehe.

Oh yeah, They made a nice boost in my stats

Okay, Dag, I'll ask. Why do you have laptops stacked under your desk?

Footwarmers?

Hmmm, that gives me an idea. I could put a stack of laptops under some of the ladies desks that currently have heaters. They get heat, I get blocks. hehehehe.....

Hmm heaters, maybe I just found a good use for the 30 p100 toshiba notebooks in the back room.

I have a Toshiba Portege 7200 (P3 600mhz) in a docking station that runs OGR & RC5 24/7, gets rather warm throughout if the lid is closed, barely warm if the lcd is up. I also have a Compaq 1120 Armada (P-100) that also runs RC5 24/7 with the lid closed and barely gets warm, no fan either! I have the client set to run full speed on the Toshiba and it seems to suck down batteries noticibly faster than without the client. I also have SpeedStep disabled on the laptop while on battery power so it runs at 600mhz instead of 450mhz. Might as well crack as full speed all the time!

I run rc5 on my latitude 300Mhz. I have it set to not run when running on battery power, but now I don't have to worry about this setting because my battery died about a month ago and I'm too cheap to buy a new one. I would highly recommed having the client pause when running on battery power.
