here is a good review:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...geforce-gtx-460-1gb-gtx-460-768mb-review.html

Not only does it have minimums, it also shows graphs with AA and without. Starting to really like that website.

I like them a lot as well. They're on my must-view list every time a decent card comes out.

edit: several of their games are unplayable at high levels with either card, but the 460 is definitely a lot better. honestly, I'd spend $115 for a used 4890 instead.

a gtx460 is barely faster than the gtx260 unless using lots of AA and they both use about the same amount of power under load. the gtx460 only looks good because we have had such crappy bang for buck cards this entire generation.

We must not be looking at the same information, because what I see is a card that is faster then a GTX 285, only much less heat, and power consumption.

It is definitely ~20-25% faster then a GTX 260; and when overclocked it is well more then that. It even matches the GTX 470 when OCed in select games (I am not saying overall), and CAN trade blows with the 5850 in certain situations when OCed (Of course the 5850 can OC a ton to, so honestly the 5850 is better if you feel like spending the extra $50-100 for it.)

It's not for everyone. The reason it is such a big deal is that it is basically a great logical upgrade for people hanging on to their G92 chips, like myself. Which I imagine there is a ton of people still using G92 chips.

It isn't for everyone; I for one tend to never use AA, for some reason jaggies have never been a huge deal to me; and at 1920x1080 they are reduced alot anyways.

Upgrading from a 9800GTX 512, i will be able to have no problem cranking the settings in almost any game, and since I don't use AA it really shouldn't be a problem.

If you already have a 260, I can understand how paying another 200 for 25% increase is not really worth it, but for G92 owners it is a huge boost, without any additional power requirements. Basically you are in the same place power and heat wise, but a ton of more graphics power.

read the review on techreport. in some cases the gtx260 didnt even get more than few fps than a gtx260. the gtx460 1gb only got ONE more fps in Just Cause 2 at 1920 and the 768mb model was actually one frame slower than the gtx260. heck in Borderlands the gtx260 tied the 1gb model at 2560.

I think that is part of it but lots of people only talk about a certain time.

For example, when the 4870 launched, its msrp was $300. I think it was the 512MB version also. I think the 1GB version launched at $300 also. The 4890 at $250. The GTX 260, $400!

The 5770 is roughly comparable to the 4870 1GB and kinda close to the GTX 460. Its msrp is $159 but it was being compared to close-out, EOL cards that were on sale, rebates and w bing cashback. Even then its still looks good enough.

The bang for the buck doesn't look as good "right now" versus the end of last generation. Overall, its looks good to me.

But he needs it for 1920x1080. Would anyone honestly recommend a 5770 for that resolution unless the OP could not spend $200?

I posted that I am using a 9600GT (the SSC version) but what I didn't post is that I am pretty satisfied with it. Its more of am upgrade itch/wanting to spend money kind of thing. I don't play all the new games, I usually buy games on sale/Steam sales. So far, I've only come across two games that gave me problems. Bad Company 2, completely even dropping resolutions didn't help. Sold it. GTA 4, I'm using a Q9550 at 3.2GHz so I doubt its the cpu.

I play every game at full detail but usually no AA (though lots of my games still run good at native/AA). To give you an idea, some of the newer games I play are COD:MW and Left 4 Dead/2. I still have on my Steam list (to play yet): Elder Scrolls 4, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Stalker SoC, Shattered Horizon and Call of Juarez.

I think my current card should be able to handle those at native and max/close to max detail apart from Stalker and Call of Juarez (don't know about Elder Scrolls). I think Bad Company 2 is the only game that really punished my videocard. Maybe GTA 4 can be OK with adjusting some setting (didn't play too long).

Its more of a spending money kind of thing but I would like to get a good value for my money. I've been waiting for the new cards to drop but they haven't and I think as soon as I buy, official price drops will come . I might be happy with the 5770 but am slightly worried that several games will come up that won't play well on it so I should hold out till the 5850 drops to $200. But I always think its a bad idea to buy for the future so I guess I should follow my own advice...

if these are your two choices and you're playing at 1920x i'd go for the 460. i bought a 5770 back in march for $160, there was no better alternatives, but i only have a dual core and play at 1680x so the 5770 works good for me.

it depends on what your CPU is too.

Seems like this is likely not a hardware issue, but more of a driver/optimization issue.

And of course it could be the way the game was written that some architecture won't benefit as much.

I can tell you that 470 SLI is much better in JC2 than 260 SLI was as that is what I had before. With 260 SLI I had to turn AA to 2X and turn off AO and GPU water and it still dropped into the 30's. Now I have 8XQ and GPU water on and it rarely drops below 50 fps. It is close to twice as fast now. Both cards were OC'd as well. Empire Total War is closer to three times faster as I had to turn shadows completely off and no AA and medium unit size with 260 SLI. Now I have AA at 8X and full shadows and everything on Ultra settings and it rarely drops below 60 fps with vsync on. I only leave ambient occlusion off.

Since the OP has a Q9550 the 460 won't be bottlenecked much at all so I would recommend that or what to see if the 5850 drops in price shortly. Plus since the 460 is new it might cost a bit more now than it will in a few weeks.

If you're upgrading because you want to spend money, then might as well go all the way and get a GTX 460 1gb. You know you want to SLI it later down to road for near 5870 crossfire performance.

That's what I'm thinking (gtx 460 1GB). Can't SLI because I'm on a P45 board. I'll probably keep it for 2 years or so.

The GTX 460 1GB is like 50%+ faster than 5770 at some games and in the all popular 1920 rez. I think if you upgrade you WILL feel the speed increase in games. But of course, not every game you will feel this speed increase. In several games, 5770 already doing 30+ fps you probably will feel little improvement.

It depends on your games, if they are running great on 5770 then you probably can hold off on the upgrade. besides 5770 uses far less power so that's something to consider as well.

The HD 5770 is only slighly slower than the HD 4870 which means that the GTX 460 isn't much faster, yet more expensive and power hungry. For the almost same performance and less power consumption you could buy an HD 5830 once it drop in price which will be soon. This generation of cards has shown the worst price/performance ratio and less efficient IPC compared to previous generations. How could be possible that a GTX 260 is only slighly slower than the GTX 460 in many scenarios, considering that the GTX 460 has considerably more shader processors, the same goes to the HD 5830 which barely outperforms and often looses against the HD 4890.

The GTX460 is in a different performance class than the 5770. Of course, if you get a 5770 that can be voltage adjusted, it will OC like a fiend. However, the GTX460 does well too.

Is there a review I am missing out on where we see the 260 consistently performing even close to the 460?

There is one review where I saw the 260 match the 460, but it is likely due to a driver issue, or the way the game was written.

In all other cases I see the 460 outperforming the 285 95% of the time, and by a noticeable margin in many cases.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/1

In the guru3d review the 460 1GB and 768MB outperform the 260 by a nice margin in the games they show the 260s numbers in as well as the 285.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3809/nvidias-geforce-gtx-460-the-200-king

In the anand review we see more of the same. The 260 consistently losing by ~20FPS, with the 285 matching, and even sometimes beating in a select few games, likely due to driver optimizations.

If you already have a 260, I could see how $200 may not merit the extra 20fps if the games you are playing already run "smooth enough".

But to say that the 460 is matched by the 260 is an overstatement.

The one advantage the HD5770 has over the GTX 460 is it's power requirement. The HD5770 only requires one 6pin connector, where the GTX 460 needs two. Personally, I was a little disappointed here, as my Dell's PSU probably can't handle the 460, while the 5770 would be no problem.

Where is Nvidia with a GTS 450 that competes well with the HD5770?

Your Dell should be fine with a GTX 460, especially a 768MB.

The GTX 460 uses 150W max, which can be sustained by one 6-pin PCI-e power plug. You should be fine using one connector from your motherboard and then a 2-molex to 6-pin PCI-e adaptor.
