How does "The Jungle" end?

I've been reading this book for a class. I have a quiz on it in 45 minutes.

I read up through chapter 27, where Jurgis finds out that Marija is working as a prostitute. I'm sick of this book. It's depressing. Will someone just tell me what happens in the last 4 chapters?

IT is true that the packing plant closes, but sailing back to the Congo? C'mon man....cut the guy some slack, he's studying for a test.

What REALLY happens is that after the plant closes Jurgis and Elzbieta testify before Congress about the industry. Jurgis then retires to the country and lives out his remaining years running a small store and organizing Socialist gatherings. Eventually he is killed by angry auto workers during a Socialist protest outside of Henry Ford's plant.

Meanwhile Elzbieta moves to California and ends up working as an actress in a few silent movies. Later she becomes a spokeswoman for N.O.W. and becomes a lesbian. Oh that is never fully stated, but it's there if you read between the lines.

The first part of the Jungle was good but the second part becomes a rallying cry for communism.

El Fenix was messing with you by mixing the plot for Heart of Darkness/ Apocalypse Now.

The Jungle is not that hard of a book to finish, easy reading compared to juggernauts like Ulysseus, Moby Dick, or Scarlet Letter.

Be that as it may, it was directly responsible for major reforms in the food industry, and is of great historical significance for this reason alone.

meat packing plant yes...but the kurtz thing is heart of darkness...either your trying to get him to fail or you messed up your books

Apocalypse Now, it's based on the Heart of Darkness by Conrad.

Soon after getting his job, Jurgis returns to Marija, imploring her to leave the brothel, but she refuses. She is addicted to morphine and cannot find work anywhere else. Jurgis reluctantly departs, returning home to a sick Elzbieta and her unruly sons, but this time, instead of leaving, Jurgis turns to socialism for support.

Members of the Socialist Party in Chicago are preparing for the election. On the night before the vote, a millionaire sympathetic to the socialist movement invites Jurgis to dinner. Here Jurgis encounters Lucas, an evangelist, and Nicholas Schliemann, a former philosophy professor, who debate the nature of socialism while answering questions for a skeptical magazine editor.

Jurgis attends a party gathering the next day to watch election returns. The Socialist Party makes substantial gains across the country, especially in Packingtown. One socialist leader interprets the results as a call for further organization by party members, for the voters may not really be socialists, but rather just disgruntled democrats. The Jungle closes with the orator inciting the crowd with chants of ?Chicago will be ours! CHICAGO WILL BE OURS!?
