How does the new Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 compare to 75GXP from IBM?

Well, Maxtor has a new kid on the block. Does anyone know how it stacks up? Will IBM be finally beaten in IDE market?

I just got myself a DiamondMax Plus 45 and it's schweeeeet. Much faster than my IBM 22GXP (7200rpm as well). Haven't used a 75GXP so I can't comment.

Oh, did i mention QUIET? It's fvcking quiet! I swear to god it makes no noise whatsoever!

This affects performance, but you can turn off the noise reducing thing. I benchmarked with HD Tach and the only difference when the noise limiter thing was on was that the access time was a little slower (5ms). Even when it's not on, the drive is incredibly quiet.

But I don't think IBM was compared to Plus 45, only to Plus 40 which is different. Anyway, I already got 30GB IBM 75GXP for $122 shipped from Buy.com, so hopefully I did the right thing of going with the $2 more expensive Hard Drive.

Luke, I have that same 30 gig IBM from Buy.com. I love it. Dead silent. I have it on a Promise Ultra66 card and it is very fast! I've always used Deskstars. I've had 2.1, 6.4 ,8.4, 18 and now the 30! Each one was going to be the last, since "I'll never need more space than that!"

I hope you mean 0.5ms Kami. 5ms is a huge decrease in access time and will significantly affect drive performance. There is no real reason to turn on the noise limiter unless you have to be in a dead silent environment or are absolutely paranoid about hard drive noise.

If that's the case xtreme, I wouldn't recommend turning on the noise limiter under any circumstance. 5ms is the roughly the equivalent of turning your 7200RPM drive into a 3200RPM with the same STR.

Not really...the DiamondMax Plus 45 was still quite a bit faster in benchmarks for me than my IBM 22GXP when the noise reducer was on. I of course have it off, though. And with it off I can't even hear the drive over my power supply anyway unless I put my ear up to the case.

3200 rpm? hahah dude your funny.

not even.

Seek times will go up so finding files and fragments would take slightly longer but transfer rates would remain the same. i had it on my and turned it off and it raise performance by 10%.

xtreme2k,

thanks for the link, very interesting read indeed. Looks like I made the right choice going with IBM Though to be honest, I don't think anyone would make a wrong decision to go for Maxtor. They are so close that no one can notice the difference, unless they run benchmarks, of course. Can't wait till I get my IBM!

I personally got a 75GXP and I am impressed that a drive released by IBM nearly half a year ago is still the fastest IDE drive now, especially Maxtor released the DM45+ and Quantum has LM+, both arrive LATER than the IBM

now i think the only drive that might beat the 75GXP is the Seagate Baracuda3 or the Quantum AS
i am impressed by Quantum AS's specification though

I am using dual 75GXP's in a RAID-0 (dual) now. I have tried the DM45, and it was pretty much the same as a single 75GXP. Sandra benched the IBM 75GXP @ 23,300 and the DM45 @ 21,500. My 75GXP RAID setup benches 37,600
