How does this make ANY sense? (GPU prices, even lower-end)

Just checked the latest prices for the parts i would need to build a new system.
Since i can reuse psu, hdd and monitor, before the whole price gouging happened the cost of my supposed build was coming to about $500.
Now its coming to $600. That's a bit less than 20% increase.
So yes although the situation is quite bad, its not terribly bad if you aim to build a budget gaming system.
You pay $50 more for ram than you used to(8gb ddr4) and $50 more graphics card than you used to (1050ti) so about $100 more than previously.
Bad but considering you will keep the system for about 5 years, $100 is not much at all.
Ofcourse the price gouging is much higher if you opt for more expensive parts but then nobody is forcing you to buy hi end parts.

Only thing is a 1050 ti isn't going to last 5 years even for budget gaming. I only bought one as I have a lot of games to play from the last 3 years that I missed when they were released.

I doubt the gpu prices will be so high for all eternity so one could always upgrade 2 or 3 years later as per their needs.

Now that crypto is starting to stabilize, prices should start to stabilize. But who knows. It's likely production of Pascal has been ramped down and/or stopped in preparation for Ampere/Turing. So until that release, prices will likely stay high.

As a small time miner myself (only 2 GTX 1070 TI's) I'm almost debating on selling to recoup the costs so I wonder if other miners may start to do the same. At least smaller ones who tried to get started but could not because of the shortage. Big scale miners are better off just continuing to mine. I may possibly at least sell one card, and then just convert the mining machine to a gaming machine. Not sure though... I built a pretty skookum rackmount case that was suppose to house 8 cards so I feel that effort was kind of futile if I give up.

Probably going to ride it out and see what happens. When it's no longer profitable then I'll re-purpose the hardware, or if a miracle happens and a bunch of 1070's flood the market for cheap I might jump on them. I will be behind the performance curve though if all the miners start to buy the latest and greatest cards when they come out.

Probs would be better to sell now. Price manipulation by big crypto holders is what started the boom. most of the ICOs are sketchy AF, too. Once government oversight is comes online, all the fraud that caused the boom will come to light and the bubble pops

I suddenly see many used gtx1070, 1060 cards for sale.
The prices are not nearly as bad as they were.
A gtx1060 for under $300 ,many 1070's for under $500.

I was thinking of consolidating my mining GPUs into one open-air rig.

Was thinking of this one:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...ccessories-_-9SIAFW56ZP3539-S3A9A&ignorebbr=1

Also, Newegg has a six-pack of riser cards + cables for ~$50 on their ebay site, and Biostar has a new-ish B350 mining board, with PCI-E x16, and five x1 slots, and a DVI output.

My only question about this board, is, will it take a 2200G APU, and will that APU work for mining? (Enough PCI-E lanes, and also be able to drive the DVI output?)

Would that also run EthOS, or is the B350 too new a hardware? (I assume it's based on Linux?)

I've got a hodge-podge of cards, an RX 460 4GB, an RX 470 4GB, an RX 570 4GB, an RX 570 8GB Gaming X, and a GTX 1070 ti Titanium (higher than Gaming X).

Will EthOS handle mixed GPU vendors?

Edit: And Happy, do you think it would be a good time to pick up some more or newer cards?

so wait. You complain about the prices and then show us this? Isnt this part of the problem?

No, I was trying to be more specific. My example in the OP was of a GTX1050ti, arguably not a mining card, being overpriced.

While mining demand (now waning), was part of the problem, current problems are more supply-side oriented.

The shortage of higher end parts increases demand on the GTX 1050ti as it's the next best thing.

It will take a bit for supply to catch back up, I suspect the next few weeks will be kind to us that waited patiently...

Kind of interesting, based upon the nowinstock details... Newegg will take something OOS for 15 minutes when they are intending to de-gouge a product.

Nice to see some GTX 1070 TI's in stock for under $800 now. But still more money than I want to pay at this point. I don't think I will bother trying to finish my mining rig at this point and cut my losses. I'll keep mining with what I have until difficulty makes it not worth it in hopes it might rebound. Have not cashed in most of my mined coin yet.

I got mine for $450 just before the prices hit the ceiling. I don't buy again until they come back down to that.

Oh, and I fold to cure cancer, not mine. I wish mining would DIE.

Cancer is not a bad way to check out of life on this earth.I know that is not the answer you are looking for.

But I thought the major reason supply was so limited was because cards were being bought for mining?

It's a slow and painful way to die, it's perhaps one of the worst - other then being left in some retirement home half blind, half deaf, incontinent, barely able to leave your room, desperately lonely and isolated - which unfortunately is what keeping someone alive past any reasonable quality of life can bring.

One thing I was actually wanting to do if I finish a full rig is to eventually run F@H on it when mining is not viable enough. Been a long time since I ran that, and never tried with GPUs, would be kind of cool to see the kind of performance I'd get.

The fact that GPUs are so good for processing data now days may be part of the issue too, the manufacturers arn't considering the fact that people/organizations are buying them for more than just gaming, or mining. Even without mining there is still a case for building big GPU rigs.

I regretted not picking up a RX580 when they were $160 but that was now long time ago. Since then I have simply given up and sat on my GTX 960. I have to say that it handles 4K desktop fine. No way I am paying the current prices of graphics cards.

Yea, I regret not picking up a gtx1070 for $329 over a year ago.
I sold my rig for now.

Prices dropping at a pretty good rate right now on the used market... I still saw a GTX1060 6gb go down to $260 yesterday and as of this morning it still hasn't sold. A few GTX1070 for $400... it will keep sliding I think for a little bit at least.

I was going to message Nvidia courtesy of Sum Ting Wong with the graphics card prices.
