So is nvidia going to have a plan to deal with this mining inflation for the launch of their next GPUs?

Yeah. Much higher MSRPs. I think that's part of the reason I think the talk about it not being called x70 and x80 is true. Especially factoring in the memory price increases.

I could see a mining specific SKU if it made sense binning wise.

I agree, much higher MSRPs will be the answer to the mining inflation. There might be an exploratory attempt at a 'Mining only' GPU, but it is going to fail. There is no way they will attempt to prevent mining on their main line of gaming GPUs. Why would they want to intentionally limit their cards? Yes, they prefer gamers as their primary market, because it is a stable market, but not so much that they are willing to considerably limit their sales.

Instead I expect them to come up with some 'value added' gimmick like they did with the last round, making an SKU where a significant portion of the price is something that gamers will value but miners will not. Probably expect to see huge game bundles, bundles with monitors or other gaming hardware, Steam Credit, or something similar.

BestBuy looks to have gotten another shipment of the FE 1070 and 1080's in stock for in store only purchasing for those who are looking. Small markup compared to the Nvidia store pricing.

I noticed 1070 TI's going for like $300-$400 now on Ebay, they're coming down! If it was 1 month ago I'd be jumping all over those but I don't really expect to bring a ROI so I think I'll cut my losses and just keep mining with the 2 cards I have.

I feel that the prices are going to stay where they are now for a long time before they go down. Long time for me is like 18 months or longer. At the medium range graphic cards are still going up in price. 1030 and 1050s. That is the range of cards that I am interest in. I may just go with the 1030 and upgrade in three years or just use my onboard video. Just want to get my machine as fast as possible but may not be worth the cost! I will see how my new SSD affects the speed. It still has not come yet!

So I just looked. Virtually every video card from EVGA is now available on their site, at the highly inflated prices.....

At least maybe they will come down now. If sales are bad at these prices....

Yes it is. I hope you don't have to watch your friends and loved ones die that way.
We have to remember its not the way we die that is important but how we live. Thats what dying is about.

I have had close family and friends die from cancer in the early thirtieth leaving small age children. Dying in early age is always a huge loss and huge pain leaving huge gaps in life.

But i have also witnessed there is sometimes worse ways. Eg when your child commits suicide after a psychological depressing life. Leaving family with guilt and pain. Or sudden death by traffic accident leaving all unprepared and traumatised.

A third of us is going to die from cancer. Sure a stroke what not is far better than the rotten damn cancer that seems to come direct from hell.

But all is constant reminder for us to each day, each minute to do our utmost to get most of life.

Well one can hope so, can't they? However even if the 1070 dropped down to $250, I not sure I would want to buy a GPU that was released 2 years ago even if it is still much better then my 970.

As long as ethereum stays over $300, mining is profitable. Ethereum over $500-$600 and there will be another craze of demand. The cards will not come down in price.
The recent price reduction for video cards was mainly because of some relief in the RAM supply combined with a full out effort by the OEMs to make more cards.

The current situation of the GPU market is the dream of any company that deals with development cycles.
Why rush a new product when you are selling every single piece of the old one, and for MORE than when it launched? All equipment, engineering and development amortization has already been paid. By keep selling the old one, it is pure profit.

Because if one of your competitors comes out with a new product that beats yours all your sells will instantly dry up and you will be stuck unable to move your product until you can produce a competing product again.

Can still keep the new product ready to go, just don't release it right away. That's probably what they're doing really. Makes sense from a business point of view. They'll also be able to charge even more for the new one while keeping the current prices for existing.

Whoever goes to market first with a new product is going to get the leg up on the competition and leave everyone else with stock that they will probably take at least a small loss on. So, if they are sitting on a new product trying to milk the current market they are playing a game of chicken with their competitors. There is more to product release than profit, there is market share. If they can release now, and their competitors can't immediately release a competing product they will win a fairly large chunk of market share.

NVidia has a fairly comfortable lead in market share right now, but if they wait to long and let AMD release a new product first they will lose a good portion of that lead fairly quickly.

AMD is not going to release anything for gaming until Navi shows up sometime in mid? 2019 though. So nVidia can sit on it for a little bit if they want.

The prices seem to be on the rise again, plus the used cards on offer have disappeared as well (at least where I live).
Guess I'll keep using my trusty 380 until it dies.

Even if the cards fall back to their MSRP's it still wouldn't look like a good deal since the current generations are already ~2 years old.

I was in Best Buy on Saturday to get some 80mm case fans, as they were not a rip off and I kinda needed them.

Well, I noticed they had all sorts of RX 580's and 570's stacked on the shelf and was wondering if price drops were going to happen soon.

They did!

580 8GB @ $320 now and 570 8GB @ $280

Awesome, a 2 year old card selling for only $61 over MSRP. The 580 and 570 launched in 2010, so they are now like 8 years old?
This really is depressing.
The RX570 and RX580 were launched April 11, 2017 (at $170-$230). I don't see any mention of the gtx580 in his 2nd sentence or the links themselves. Still depressing.

D'oh! I actually have a dead GTX570 sitting on my desk right now so that is where my mind went.

Still, the RX 480 is just shy of the two year mark and it launched at $240. 580 is basically the same thing, so it's depressing that two years later and $320 is considered a bargain.

Best Buy near me shows 1070 FE back in stock at $400, RX 580 is now $420 and RX 570 is $350. LIke WTF is going on with the AMD card prices.

I paid $300 for a used 1070 FE in March 2017.

I bit the bullet and bought an open but unused 1080 TI SC2 for under its regular retail price.

If I can ever get a Vega at MSRP it will get sold, if not, well, I gots it now.

I wonder if there are still shortages (demand>supply) or are the greedy resellers refusing to lower price and build up stock for a possible next high in mining.

I think AMD said a few months ago already that they are ramping up the GPU production. So there shuld be more cards on the market now or in the very near future.
