How far are Dell LCDs from the best?

I'm thinking of getting a 23-24" LCD, right now I have the Dell 2005FPW and am wondering if there is another level of image quality to be obtained over the Dells. Of course due to Dell's pricing it's hard to find anyone that owns a different brand, especially in the 23-24" size.

For example, this sony here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824006084

Would be about $270 more than a Dell 24" on sale. Could I expect noticeably better quality?

The quality might well be better, but then Dell have never represented the utmost in quality but incredible value. I much like you have a 2005fpw and it is great, when the time comes to change it I will certainly look in Dell's direction again.

Viewsonic,Samsung and Acer all make excellent LCD Monitors.Tom's Hardware did a ealy good review of Monitors that seperated the good from the bad.Ananatech has reviewed some Monitors themselves.

I will never buy a Dell product again.

I could go on for about 12 pages about my horrible Inspiron 9300 notebook experience, but I don't think you want to read it.

Summary:

Bought laptop
Laptop took 3 weeks to arrive
Laptop had dead pixels and HD problems
5 CSR's and 45 days later I received a new one
New one had dead pixels
Returned laptop and fought for 15 days for refund.

The end.

Summary:

Bought laptop coo - a good deal I'm assuming since you decided to buy it.
Laptop took 3 weeks to arrive - generally laptops take some time to get setup and shipped.
Laptop had dead pixels and HD problems - sh!t happens, that's why dell has warranty's.
5 CSR's and 45 days later I received a new one - I've never gone through more than 2, and 45 days seems a bit too much, something go wrong?
New one had dead pixels
Returned laptop and fought for 15 days for refund. - sorry to hear that, but at least your got your money back.

The end.

Not related in any way to the OP's question. Feel free to move on to the notebook section and post how crapy your experience with Dell was. You are one out of many with that problem. I've been there too....SEVERAL times. But, let's try to stick to the topic at hand.

Thanks for your concern.

It actually is related, because you get what you pay for when you buy a Dell.

The Dell LCD will be cheaper than others in the segment, but you better pray to whatever god you worship that nothing goes wrong.

I read your little bolded comments above, and it almost sounds like you accept poor customer service. Good for you, because you keep the standards low for everyone.

WTF?

You've come to expect too much I think...

That's right, you get what you pay for when it comes to Dell. But your experience shouldn't overshadow his decision when it comes to buying a Dell or not. I would like to think that an experience with a Dell laptop having problems wouldn't relate to problems related to Dell LCD's. Two totally different products.

I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong with Dell LCD's however. There are some def. issues with bleeding and such on the screens. There have been revisions for that though and you are able to send it in to get it replaced should that be the issue. most however deal with it as it is hard to find a better deal.

It's not that I choose to accept poor customer service. Not at all. Hardware failures and such aren't related to customer service. My bolded comments never mentioned anything about how I feel about Dell's customer service. I hate it, but you know what? At least I have it. And my experience with Dell comes on a small business level. Where I deal with several laptops purchased from there and being in contact with Dell customer services sometimes is a regular occurrence. My comment here is to make sure the OP realizes that his experience shouldn't be changed by someone else's supposed bad experience with a different product from Dell, and most likely a different tech support situation overall.

Edit:

If you're curious about what problems there are...here are some links of some reviews:

Just a list if you want to get a general idea of what is out there, and how well they stack up against each other.

I have had nothing but great experiences with Dell (own a DJ, an Inspiron 6000, and a 2407) both with their products and any support that I have needed.

I think for bang-for-your-buck they can be hard to beat sometimes.

your 2005FPW uses a S-IPS which is actually one of the higher quality panels

also the newer 2007WFP and 2407WFP Panels have banding issues not sure about the 3007WFP

also everyone who buys the newer dell monitors always would FPW which is technically wrong they changed the name to WFP

FPW = Flat Panel Wide
WFP = Wide Flat Panel

you can look on there site for urself if you don't trust me

Where are you seeing the brightview monitor? And the next question is, do they have a brightview 30"?

My first LCD was a Dell 1801FP, and I had no problems with it. My second was the one I have now, the 2005FPW, and I have no issues with it. A lot of people were reporting uneven backlighting but I guess I was lucky. My one issue with it was it was too bright and the brightness control was useless, so I had to lower the brightness in software.

However I recently got a 17" notebook with a "glossy" display and overall it's just a lot more pleasant to look at then the Dell. That's the only reason why I was looking into what 23-24" panels were available besides Dell, such as the Sony, so I could possibly get that same quality in a desktop display

First try comparing it to a different monitor. That Sony is based on a three year+ old panel. The 2405 is the most flexible monitor period. Too bad I lost all the features going to dual 3007's but the space makes up for it.

Odd. I've used Dells in the last three companies I've worked for and I have 2 LCD's at home. Not to mention I've owned 2 of their laptops previous and never had a single problem with getting customer service to fix things. The battery for my last laptop went bad and they sent me a new one UPS overnight with a return label paid for.

I got what I paid for. You just have to know how to handle these situations and who to talk to. That's my experience and 2 cents.

I've had good experiences with Dell laptops, I owned an inspiron 9300 and it was a great laptop aside from being too big and heavy for the mobility I decided I wanted. Dell customer support was great too, I accidentally dropped my battery which cracked the plastics on it - worked fine but looked bad. I had complete care and basically all I said was "hey I dropped my battery and the plastic is cracked" and in 2 days I had a new battery

When I bought my LCD for my desktop I looked at reviews and according to them the viewsonic vx2025wm was better than the dell 2007fpw for color, backlight bleeding, and viewing angles so I got the viewsonic. Glad I did, I love it
