How far can you hit a golf ball?

How about your average and your longest drive ever.

I probably average around 250, but only about 50% of my drives end up on the fairway. I could hit closer to 300 if I tried to smack it, but that 50% would drop to about 10%.

My longest drive was about 325. It was a 330 yd par 4 and I drove to the green. The green was slightly lower than the tee box, but it was uphill from the fairway to the green, so no rolling was involved. Picture a valley with the tee box on one side and the green on the other. Oh, and I also hit about 10 balls before I got one on the green. It was getting dark and time to go home, so I was just messing around seeing if I could hit that far.

I've been over 300 with a roll.
I've also mishit the hell out of it....
I'd say my average drive is in the 250+ range. Not always straight though (have the tendency to push it becaus I don't get my hands through fast enough).

Finished last year with a horrible 14 handicap. Highest in about 5 years (not enough time on the course, and Whistling Straits ate me alive when I played there).

when i was golfing 2-3 times a week (like 10 years ago) i could drive the ball about 250 or so and be on target. if accuracy was not an issue i could hit 300+

If I don't slice, off the tee I can get about 250 on average. I'm just a wee guy. If down hill, down wind, hehe, watch out Tiger.

About 300 is my longest. A bit downhill and one hell of a roll, during summer so it got a good roll.

I average 260-270

not far enough
not high enough
not low enough
not with enough back spin
not straight enough, on command
not far enough right, on command
not far enough left, on command

& my putting is even worse

280+ on a good day.
-80 on a bad day.

If you looked up "inconsistency" in the dictionary, you would see a huge picture of me holding a golf club.

Does it have to be straight? I haven't played in a few years (okay like 10) and I had a wicked slice and I'd get about 270ish maybe.

Around 270-280. 230 if I mis hit it or don't really hit it on the screws.

I did drive a 370 yard par 4 once. Slightly downhill with what must have been a 30 mph wind at my back, with very hard ground.

That's pretty good. Seniors don't normally have the swing speed to hit that far.

i'd say 240 average for me.

the longest ball i ever hit was with a 3-wood. a storm was coming in and there was a 60-km tailwind blowing straight for the green on a 365-yd par 4. we were messing around taking huge cuts and i caught one clean. walked out there to retrieve our balls because it was starting to rain and get nasty and i couldn't find mine. my friend on a power cart drove up a ways and said, "there is one on the green."

i went up to check it and it was my DT so-lo.

depends on the day

good day 240-280 (no slow groups ahead of me)
bad day 200-220 (people betting in the group ahead of me, taking their sweet @ss time measuring every single 6 inch putt, and I lose my patience. That or some @hole who wants to drive his ball into my back pocket on every hole)

longest was probably 320+

Hey, watch out there whippersnapper

But yeah, I'm a pretty big guy and played college and semi-pro golf when I was younger. Not nearly as strong as I used to be, but my swing mechanics are still good. Swing mechanics are much more important than strength.

And it has been kind of strange for me, I don't think I've lost any length since my college days. As my strength has slowly diminished over the years the tech of the clubs and balls have increased enough to keep me at about the same distance. Give me a time machine and let me take my current Taylormade driver and current tech balls back to the 70's and I'm sure the college age me could have hit consistently over 300

I find that how ever far people think they hit it, if they actually had measured distance markers to reference, they'd find they were quite a bit shorter.

Also, keep in mind that many golf ranges cheat on the distance markers to make you think you are better than you are.

Depends on how well I hit the ball. I'd say about 200 yards though on a good day...I suck at golf.

What's your handicap?

Mechanics are definately true, but I thought clubhead speed still played a big deal in distance? glad you caught my friendly jab, but you would be on the Seniors tour.

on cheap courses you are right. the markers are wrong.

But if you golf a lot odds are you are golfing on a good course. where the markers are right and you are consistant enough to know.

if someone is hitting a consistant 250-275yard accurate drive they know how far they are hitting from experiance.

I do agree with driving ranges. the local one i go to all the time has a 300 and 350 yard marker. i can hit the 300 yard marker without to much effort. i bet its around 250 yards. the 350 yard marker is maybe 20 yards past that but off to the side.

with good mechanics you should still have good clubhead speed. higher then if you are stronger and poor mechanics.

I rarely hit a driver because of accuracy but on a good day about 280. I have pretty good control over my 3-wood and can poke it out about 230. That usually does the trick when playing from the front tees.

yeah, but have you ever seen slow-mo of the pros? It's wild to see their clubs bend that much. I think Tiger's is like 130 mph.
