3-wood is all I ever use anymore too. I gladly sacrifice the 20 or 30 yards to be in the short stuff... or in bounds!

And it has been kind of strange for me, I don't think I've lost any length since my college days. As my strength has slowly diminished over the years the tech of the clubs and balls have increased enough to keep me at about the same distance. Give me a time machine and let me take my current Taylormade driver and current tech balls back to the 70's and I'm sure the college age me could have hit consistently over 300

What's your handicap?

Mechanics are definately true, but I thought clubhead speed still played a big deal in distance? glad you caught my friendly jab, but you would be on the Seniors tour.

My current handicap is 7, could be lower but I only get to play 5-6 times a year any more.

clubhead speed is the determining factor for sure, my point is swing mechanics play a bigger role in clubhead speed than pure strength.

What I can't do anymore that I used to be able to is get an extra 20-30yds when I needed it by swinging hard.

Amazing how many don't realize that. I know where the ball is and have a better 2nd shot than most of my partners. I actually enjoy it a whole lot more playing from the fairway

Not too shabby at all. I assume you're still playing Steel with a drive like that.

I've got something fundamentally screwed up in my swing - meaning I'm doing something wrong consistently....block to the right with Irons. Goal for this year is heavy lessons and custom fitted clubs.

Also, keep in mind that many golf ranges cheat on the distance markers to make you think you are better than you are.

on cheap courses you are right. the markers are wrong.

But if you golf a lot odds are you are golfing on a good course. where the markers are right and you are consistant enough to know.

if someone is hitting a consistant 250-275yard accurate drive they know how far they are hitting from experiance.

I do agree with driving ranges. the local one i go to all the time has a 300 and 350 yard marker. i can hit the 300 yard marker without to much effort. i bet its around 250 yards. the 350 yard marker is maybe 20 yards past that but off to the side.

yeah, i was talking about ranges.

I won the longest drive at a new driving range few yr ago, so long enough to win something.

My longest ever was about 370. And before anyone calls shens, it might've made 290 on flat ground.

Realistically, I expect about 270-280. I've got a few more yards in there, especially if I ever shell out the bucks for a higher lofted driver. But I like the low trajectory here in Texas...

If I put down my driver and never hit anything more than a 5 iron, I'd probably score lower. But it would take something away from the game. Even if I'm inconsistent with my driver, it's the feeling I get from that one great drive that makes me want to keep playing.

Well the game is different for everyone. I prefer to strive for the lowest score possible and keeping the driver covered helps me reach that goal. Hitting a driver 20 yds OB does not add to my enjoyment but hitting fairway-green-birdie/par does. More weekend golfers would be better served practicing from 20yds and in (or putting) than they are going to a range and bombing drives.

anywhere from 0 - 175 yards... at a driving range. Can you tell I'm an amateur who's done it only twice ?

I've also mishit it and broke the club... it went flying into the field... had to go back for it the next day... sorry, friend.

Yep, I did switch from the old heavy dynamic S shafts to the new lighter "rifle steel" a few years back. The only graphy in my bag is the 5wood which is a tourX stiff(for accuracy not distance)

If your constantly blocking out to the right, something in your setup is preventing your hips/legs from fully rotating to the open position durring the follow through. Your belt buckle should be facing the target when your done. The most common cause of this is "swaying" forward with your hips instead of rotating.

That's certainly true, chances are at least half of the weekend golfers strokes are inside of 100.

But I'm a little surprised these days when I see people keeping their drivers bagged. The modern big headed drivers really are a lot easier to hit. Easier than a 3 wood even imo.

I probably average around 250, but only about 50% of my drives end up on the fairway. I could hit closer to 300 if I tried to smack it, but that 50% would drop to about 10%.

My longest drive was about 325. It was a 330 yd par 4 and I drove to the green. The green was slightly lower than the tee box, but it was uphill from the fairway to the green, so no rolling was involved. Picture a valley with the tee box on one side and the green on the other. Oh, and I also hit about 10 balls before I got one on the green. It was getting dark and time to go home, so I was just messing around seeing if I could hit that far.

When I used to golf ..... probably about 250 yards on average.

Longest drive ever was probably i nteh 350-375 yard neighborhood. Probably closer to 375 yards. Accordign to the markers on the course, I hit it 365 yards. The beauty of a drought, short grass and a low hard drive that rolled 100+ yards. I reember that dirve like it was yesterday. Right down the middle of the fairway on a 500 or so yard par 5.

Definately agree on the driver technology. The drivers are actually easy to hit and pretty forgiving these days. Even if I don't catch the ball dead center it is still going to go 200+.

Need to go pick up a 2 iron hybrid for some fun with Par 5s.
