what really fucking annoys me is when people slam on the brakes because they see a cop on the side of the road.

like, do you really think that the cop is going to break away from the guy he's already writing a ticket for just to bust you for going 5 miles over?

In most places, that's the law. If there's a cop on the side of the road with lights on, you have to change lanes if possible or slow down if not. The amount of acceptable slow-down varies, but where I live it is "at least 5 MPH under the posted limit".

Sometimes the speed limits are stupid (highway at 70kph when they're usually 100kph). Some areas are prone to radar traps, so obviously the speed limit in those areas. I have found that I don't get pulled over unless surpassing the limit by more than 20kph. So on the highway where the limit is 100kph, I can comfortably go 120 without worrying about being pulled over. Most of the time there are other cars going at least this fast.

I usually go closer to the speed limit on smaller streets. Most of the time, I give myself more than enough time to reach my destination in case of delays. Why rush at the last minute?

Generally I drive anywhere from 3mph under the speed limit to 30mph over the speed limit. For instance, 80 in a 50 when that 50 zone should really be a 65 but they just lower it to be dicks.

Just depends on the zone and where I think there will be police officers. I've never received a ticket yet, so I must be doing something right if I can go 30 over on my daily routes and not have an issue.

I pay attention in shcool zones, construction zones and speedtrap areas. outside of these it is however I feel I can handle. I won't be doing 100 in a 55 but I feel 55 is a crappy speed limit on the interstate loop here.

Generally, as fast as conditions allow. I never speed on residential streets, and I'll drive 50km/h on busy arterial streets. Other city streets - 60-70km/h in a 50 zone. I'll look to pass anyone going slower than 55 km/h, and people going under 50 flat-out piss me off.

On the highways, as fast as I can get away with - 110-120km/h in an 80 km/h zone if there's enough space, and I'll pass anyone who is going under 90 km/h.

Thanks. You're absolutely right. It pisses me off to no end that the cops don't pull over the people cruising in the left lane. In Seattle the speed limit is 60 on most freeways and I have yet to go a day without seeing someone doing 55 in the left lane. Granted, EVERYONE is doing 55 because something in the water turns people into 5-mph-under zombies but still..

My experience (270/495/95 in maryland/virginia) is that the speed limit is really the speed limit, traffic nonwithstanding. It can get annoying sometimes, since my comfortable cruising speed is 70-75 and there have been times where I'll be passed by the *right* lane while doing 75 (this is on 95 where the limit is 65).

I actually get annoyed when someone is going the speed limit, unless they're in the right lane.

I get the same thing around here ...
I usually maintain my speed to be about 20-25% over the speed limit, though, in construction, or school zones, I'm more conservative with my speed.

My commute from work to home, has much 35mph, and some 40mph, 45mph, and 50mph sections.

In the 35mph zones, I'll keep it under 45mph, but will get passed by quite a few people.
The same road, the speed limit picks up to 45, and I try to increase my speed by 12mph... but pretty much almost never seem to stay over 50mph, because there's just toooo many cars going slow, in both lanes..... for no known reason.

Also I hate those people that go 35 in the 45 zone, then speed up to like 50, then slowly slow down to like 30 .... during a long stretch of open road with no passing, and speed limits varrying between 45 and 50 the whole time ....

Also, when the speed limit says 55, don't spend 25 years accelerating from 45 to 55mph .... just press down on the gas already!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, worst of all, are those people who ride in the left lane, when they are not passing anybody. Just because they are lazy or stupid.

Too bad the "limit" itself is rarely enforced. Where I live jaywalking is illegal but I've don't know of anyone who has been ticketed for it. If the speed limit is to be taken seriously, then the law enforcement needs to be much stricter. However, they would also have to evaluate the current limits, because I find many of them to be unnecessarily low.

Generally, I drive the speed limit + 5-10 mph.

"Going with the flow" won't get you out of a ticket if the cop chooses to stop you, so the trick, if you want to drive faster than the posted limit, is to stay at a speed that will keep you on the "ignore list."

Here in Kahleeforneeya, the speed limit can't be reduced by more than 10 mph in a mile. That means, if the posted limit is 65, (most freeways and highways) and you come to a small town, 65->55->45->35...then back to 65 once you leave the town limits. The intent is to stop the typical speed traps where there is a quick reduction in the speed limit...BUT, since people often ignore the changes in limit...the cops still park at the 35 point and write tons of tickets for those who fail to slow down.

"I can't drive 55!"
Sammy Haggar.

So how do you explain going down the 50 past Sac where its 65 all the way. You hit Placerville and it drops to 40 in no time. You're saying there needs to be gradual downward speed gradations to help me slow down? Or would 2 miles worth of warning signs be ok with "40mph zone ahead?"

Pretty much around the posted limits ( within 10MPH ) except for when I have to really get somewhere far away then I have to get to 88MPH .........:awe:

You can argue however you want, but my statement is clear and concise:

It's called the speed limit, not the speed suggestion.

Until my statement is wrong, I'm 100% right.

Used to be 8 to 9 over on interstates & state highways. Now it's 6-7 over. The state wants its ticket revenue. It's bad when the local police refer to one particular state trooper as "the ticket nazi."

I set the computer to ding me if I hit 79mph. I don't need another big ticket. I sometimes get carried away passing people... but I never sustain 80+... too many cops and no detector. Still have a case pending too. Who's ever heard of a 50mph limit on a straight highway? :|

I could totally be a ticket nazi. I would camp in the construction zone all day and click my little photo radar gun every 5 seconds.

Yesterday I was driving through a part of the ring road under construction. Speed limit is 60k (37mph). I swear every other car on the road was going at least 90k (50mph). Because it's a construction zone, a ticket for going that fast would be about $340. Fuck that. I went 65k and let everyone flip out behind me and honk. Fuck everyone else. If they wanted to get there sooner, leave earlier.

I LOL'd at your rant because I think the same thing very often when I drive... It's so true.

I generally drive 10-15 kph over, and really never had an issue.

I drive highway 7 alot between London and Stratford, Ontario.. 80kph zone, I've passed cops at 100, they don't stop anyone going 100. I did once get nailed going 114 in an 80 though. That's when I decided to keep it at 95-100.

I'm fairly certain some people just don't even look at speed limit signs. Hwy7 has a lot of commuters on it, and every now and then you get that oblivious jackass going like 70kph in an 80, with 18 wheelers and everyone else just building up behind them.. It's a safety hazard along there as its only a 2 lane secondary highway. People really need to consider everyone else when picking a speed. 95% of people usually go 85-100 on this particular stretch.

On the freeway I go as fast as traffic does and make sure to pass traffic to my right.

On the street I go a bit under the limit.

live in southern CA

speed limit is 65 MPH. I prefer to be consistently at 75-80 MPH depending on traffic. I have no problem going with the flow of traffic and getting up to 85-90 MPH, which happens in stretches on the 5 sometimes. I rarely ever weave through traffic though.
