To run the benchmark...

1.) first install Blender 2.79 (released today):

https://www.blender.org

2.) Launch Blender

3.) In the upper left hand corner of the interface locate "File" and left click on it.....A drop down menu will appear.

4.) On this drop down menu, left click on "User Preferences".

5.) Left click on "System" in "User preferences".

6.) In the lower left hand corner of "System" you will find "Cycles compute device". Select CUDA if you have an Nvidia GPU and Open CL if you have an AMD GPU. Click on "Save user Settings".

7.) Close Blender

8.) Then download the AMD file:

http://download.amd.com/demo/RyzenGraphic_27.blend

Blender will launch when you open the file.

9.) With Blender open locate "Render" in the right hand of the user interface and change device from "CPU" to "GPU Compute".

10.) Then scroll down and look in the lower right hand corner of the user interface to locate "Tiles". Change values of 32 for both X and Y to 256 for both X and Y.

11.) Press F12 to start the benchmark.

This run of benchmarks deserves its own thread as AMD made a huge improvement in OPEN CL going from Blender 2.78c to Blender 2.79.

Today marks the long-awaited debut of the Blender 2.79 3D modeling software release. Especially for those using OpenCL acceleration, Blender 2.79 is quite an exciting update.

Exciting us the most about Blender 2.79 is better OpenCL support and much greater performance.

GPU Rendering test
Below are the timings for the official Benchmark Files, using reference systems in Blender Institute. AMD and Nvidia GPUs are now giving comparable performance.

R9 290 @ 1075/1375, 17.7.2, configured as per OP, 28.41s

Getting X and Y values to 512 drops that down to around 26s.

The comparison is between CUDA on Nvidia, and OpenCL on AMD.

I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB SC and some PowerColor Radeon RX 480 4 GB (on a sticker, likely covering text for 8 GB) variant on separate computers. Too busy and lazy to install Blender. I will get around to them on Friday.

1800X @ stock with 3200mhz RAM and Vega 64 - 00:16.50 or so usually.

Last run stats listed:
Frame:0 | Time:00:16:57 | Mem:2255.74M, Peak: 2257.99M

Whatever that means.

EDIT: If I set the whole thing in there (800 x 800 tile) it takes 14 and change seconds. And if it it matters, run on 17.9.1 drivers.

Guys, forget this scene. It's far too easy for a dGPU and very simple regarding ray paths.
I'll have the benchmark results for some scenes from Blender Institute's pack on the weekend.
