I posted this on CPU forum also, but not getting any answers...

how fast is the classic athlon as compare to the nowadays cpu? I am about to aquire a classic athlon 700mhz with 512k cache with Microstart 6167 mobo (irongate chipset). Right now I am having a celery 667, would it be a big performance boost?

this might be a dumb question but why would you consider a classic Athlon? when you could buy a 1 Ghz T-Bird for $85 or so.... then you could buy a really nice motherboard like the Iwill KK266 for like $107. believe me, you'd much be better off going the Thunderbird route as cheap as prices are right now...

Maybe slightly, but the Classic Athlon never performed close to Coppermine Pentium III's or Thunderbirds, and yeah ozzie's right, why even get a Classic Athlon?

Well, I dont know much about classic athlon 700. I dont know much bout athlons, being using intel forever. But the seller told me that it is almost as the same speed as a early PIII running at 700, and he is asking for 110 for athlon700 and msi 6167. You think i am better off paying a few more and go for the Thunderbird route?

do yourself a huge favor and go to www.pricewatch.com - look at the cpu/motherboard combo section. i just saw a 1 Ghz cpu/motherboard combo for $145. thats only $35 over what you're willing to buy something "used" when you could have something "new" and with alot more power.

AFAIk the classic Athlons weren't as fast as similar clocked Coppermines...though I think they were pretty close to Katami's (sp?).

Do you have the money to get a good TBird and mobo?

Oh, what do you use your computer for? You should see somewhat of an improvement in Windows and such because of the 50% higher FSB on the classic Athlon.

Yeah Classic Athlon did perform better than Katmai PIII's but it had no Chance vs. Coppermine.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I do a lot of heavy graphics editing and stream encoding during work and I do have a nice working machine at work. But I am hoping to get one for my home so I can slack off during work. Right now, I dont have much money, and I dont think I need an upgrade that bad. See I was thinking a quick fix utill I get more $$ later. But now from what you guys said, I think I will just wait for a couple month when the price of the dual board went down.

If you're doing a lot of graphics editing and such I'd suggest waiting and getting a PC2100 DDR board, that should give you much better performance. DDR RAM is real cheap now too.

in some benchmarks SOMEwhere the PIII EB did a couple more fps in QIII.
you are talking out your ass and insulting a processor that made big waves, boyz. the Athlon was always kicking the PIII ass.
slot A should be considered as fast as Duron. at highest speeds where the cache divisor was a big 1/3 anyway. better at 700 with 1/2.
guess the dealer is a retard. spend more than 5 minutes looking around for benches and you'd know different. I am not going to argue with you, it's all there to see....
