Anybody who knows what they are doing and picks the right car and spends the money in the right places can get into the 11s with little effort these days. Just a engine swap with no mods in a Civic hatch can get 12s for under 10 grand. Bolt ons to a stock 03 Cobra can get 9s and 10s for under 30 grand. I'd say if you were in the 12s youd be in stock Viper, Vette, Cobra territory, and be able to smoke just about any normal car on the road including popular 'sporty' cars that are trendy with teens.
Cliffs: "Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?"
I agree with you though. Everyone who talks about twisty mountains roads just has a slow car and they know it. You always hear about people talking about (to name just 2 examples) how their Acura or BMW is better because of better handling... so why are people in those cars always revving at me at a red light on a straight with a merge up ahead?
1. They're idiots.
2. They're high-schoolers.
3. 2 is redundant, ignore it.
4. They haven't driven anything faster than what they're sitting in, and thus it is totally beyond their comprehension that such a car can exist.
5. See #3 re: #4 being redundant to #1.
6. The sound of a blown V8 gives me wood, and I know you won't deny me the pleasure of hearing it.
City roads and highways are straight with lots of stops and short hops to the next stop. Thus low end torque and straight line acceleration is where it is.
Personally, I like flying around corners and moving swiftly through clogged traffic. The guy with the LS2 angrily revving at me from a few car-lengths back on the interstate because he can't place his car properly is having a lot less fun that my piddly little 1.7L zinging along in front.

LOL it will be a while before I have time slips or video now...
I'd claim I could run (at least the car anyway) 10s on drag radials, 9s on slicks, should be doable with 6 spd and IRS even. But I won't without slips to back it up. And I'll never get an official slip now... Finally took it to the track and found out that a cage is required in convertibles faster than 13.99 (I thought it was 10.99 for all cars) and even a stock '03 Cobra 'vert is 12s so I didn't even get past tech :|
A cage in a vert isn't something I'm willing to do.
I've been on the hunt for a nice low mileage '03 DSG coupe for 25k or less. Seems people rarely sell DSG Cobras. I'll leave the KB 2.4 when I sell the vert and upgrade to a 2.8 or a Whipple 3.4 =D
I got the vert because I just wanted a classy but mean cruiser, but now that I've got my hands dirty, I want a real car now (ie: coupe). A cage and rear seat delete would feel right at home in a coupe, I'd save 125 lbs, and would feel better about beating on a stronger coupe unibody.
I've also been pondering just going all out and going with a wet sleeved VT 324" big bore stroker with billet internals, etc... see if I can break 1000 RWHP on 93. One of their in house test engines is making 1400 HP/~1100 TQ on a engine dyno with only 20 psi (ie: pump gas compatible boost level) Don't know if I wan't to start blowing that kind of money on one car though... so much for 'just bolt ons'. Kinda wanna get a 91 MR2 Turbo and play with a 3S-GTE too =D But I have a hard time paying $7,000+ for a 16 year old car with 150,000+ miles
I also want a 73 Falcon XB GT coupe with a 351, and a JZA80 Supra, and... good god make it stooooooop!
