Hi guys,

I'm thinking of buying a Dell desktop PC, they offer a 'Value Flat Panel' or 'UltraSharp Digital Flat Panel'.

I have a Toshiba P105 laptop with a 17" widescreen and like the picture quality. My eyes suffer badly from poor quality screens, so I need the best.

Are these Dell monitors good in general, say compared to Samsung, etc.???

The UltraSharp ones are pretty decent. You'll definitely want one with a digital connection and high contrast if you have bad eyesight. IMO Samsung/NEC are still better. Have you considered the Samsung 971P?

I was looking to buy a Dell, so I'd have to get a Dell monitor as part of the package.

If you say the UltraSharp ones are 'pretty decent', thats good enough for me. I knew Samsung, etc would be better. Just as long as there not MUCH better.

Believe half of what you read and let your own eyes be the judge.

The 2407's are sweet. I'm looking at two of them right now, couldn't be happier with my Dell screens.

And John is 100% right, take this for what it is worth and try and find one to put your own eyes on if possible.

How is the text size on those? I have a 2007FP at work and at 1600x1200 the text is rather small and hard to read. Hopefully Vista will solve this.

I agree that a TN panel is a huge step back from PVA.

I made sure to get a SIPS panel (HP L2335) but I was pretty adamant that I get a true 8-bit panel, and not a 6-bit panel dithered.

Dell has made several changes to their panels, so it's hard to tell what is in one or the other. They are only as good as the panel they use, in most cases. In some cases, not quite as good as that. There were color banding issues with some, that I believe have since been fixed. I am fairly certain those affected were required to ship their monitor back to Dell if they wanted a replacement though.

In the end though, it's the eye of the beholder to be sure. Widescreengamingforum.com is a great resource imho, because you get not only the objective stats of each monitor and revision, but you get invaluable user experiences with them. One or two reviews is fine, but they have pages and pages of experiences for some monitors. Not objective, but highly valuable.

No problems here. I do a lot of spreadsheet and Word work simultaneously and I have no problems whatsoever with the text size at 1920x1200.

The size of the panel allows me to have my Word/Excel/internet open all at the same time for maximum efficiency. Now, on my laptop the 1680x1050 on a 15.4" screen is kind of tough, so I think the 24" makes things a lot better.

The FPv series are not 8-bit (AFAIK, though they have been claimed to be), but they do have much higher contrast and better viewing angles.

I have a Dell 2007FPW and love it. I have no banding issues like many people are claiming. I have been completely satisfied with it for the last 4 months. I do miss my 2 1905FP monitors but they had too much ghosting for heavy gaming. My samsung 940Be is ok but I find it much too bright and even at lower contrast and brightness it just hurts my eyes.

All of my lcd's have been Dell's. I've had no problems with any of them. Started with a 1901FP, then upgraded to a 2005FPW and just recently bought a used 2405FPW. No dead pixels on any of them. The 1901FP had a bit of a yellowish tinge compared to the bright white of the 2005FPW when I ran them side by side and resonse time on the 1901FP was 20ms so it did get ghosty playing video games. The newer 19in from Dell have no such issues any more. Just the response time if you're a gamer or watch movies on your pc. Definitely go for the DVI too.
