How good is civ 4?

I thought civ 3 was ok, it was missing some vital things such as telling all cities to produce one set thing and keep doing that, disbanding all units of a certain type (when it comes to the year 2000 spearmen really need to go...) stuff that was in alpha centauri. Come to think of it it sucked when an elite spearman would demolish my modern armor too :frown: .

So, hows civ 4 compare? Is it like civ 3 where things are too dumbed down? or civ 2 where things are too damn overcomplicated and when you go back to it after a year or two your left baffled...?

Also will it run on an old p3 1ghz(dual)//geforce 4 ti 4400//640mb ram?

You know, you could upgrade those spearmen to modern units.

So far, I like Civ4 more than I did Civ3. Soundtrack is better too.

It wasn't too bad... but I don't like the fact that 2 of my Helicopters got owned by like 8 knights

Civ 4 is an absolutely great game. Probably the best strategy game I've played in the last few years. Here's a cool walkthru by one of the beta testers.

Warfare in the civ games has always been a little... off. Maybe it's just me but trying to take cities in civ4 is rediculously hard, even at low levels. In this way it really is modeled after real pre-modern warfare. You have to soften up a city's defenses before attacking and you need a lot of troops to attack with. Strategy is pretty important. Occassionally an archer will kill your helicopter which is a bit odd but for the most part, modern units own. Of course like 3 knights, 4 archers, and a axeman managed to take out my tank last night .

No, hours seem quite quick while playing. I'll have to time one of them next time I play.

I didn't ask if it goes by quick I wanna know the actual time, I need games that I can pick up and play anytime and not be stuck in them for a while, such as wc3, SC, DII, and any fps. I'm in university and I need quickie games as breaks between study sessions

well, since you can save any time, you can hypothetically just play a turn and then save, which probably takes less than a minute. most actions do take many turns however so you'll probably want to play for a while each session (though you won't lose any progress if you choose to save & stop)

If you dodn't have hours to be stuck to the amazing gameplay of civ4, then don't bother. Civ4 is addicting for a reason

Well, I've now played two full games of Civ4. First game, I won through the time limit, had the highest score in 2050. Second time, I won through the space race, just as I was about to unload the full force of half a dozen carriers, stocked with jet fighters, several transports all loaded with tanks and mechanized infantry, and a few ICBMS to really heat things up, against Genghis Khan and his Mongolian Empire. I intend to keep playing that game after the Space Victory.

As far as taking cities, its not too difficult. Right clicking on the enemy city, or unit, will give you a by the numbers 'odds' popup. If their number is greater than yours, don't attack. You can balance the odds by attacking from the high ground, attacking with units that exploit the enemy weaknesses, and having more experianced units. Taking a city does require you to have several attacking units available to deploy though, and there is that pesky couple of turns where the city is in revolt and you can't do anything with it. Compare that to Civ2 where it was possible to conquer an entire enemy civilization with a single tank unit.

One thing I do miss from SMAC though, is that my civilization was always several times larger than my opponents. When the Planetary Council was called, it didn't matter what everyone else voted for, I had enough votes to counter them.

In conclusion, I like Civ4.

I'm willing to give Civ4 a try because of the fond memories I had with Civ1... but Civ3 was crap.

Civ IV is great. I'm playing a game on a map of the Earth as the Chinese. Right near the beginning, I took the Mongol's capitol. Around 1500 AD I eliminated the Mongols entirely, and took all the Japanese settlements on my land. So, I have the highest score and 2nd largest military. I'm trying to decide who to nail next, India or Persia

I think some of the music is too subtle in the game. Quite often in games Im frustrated by obtrusive music but in Civ4, it seems too subtle although it sounds absolutely phenomenal when you just sit back and absorb the atmosphere of some of the classical pieces.

Well done - but many people do.

I suggest people check the forums at civfanatics for the other side of the sugar-coated version of events portrayed on some of these posts.

To be fair (beyond the widely reported ATI issues) I think the game if it can be played is quite good. But literally thousands of players have issues caused by nothing other than the rush out of the door which means they cant play their paid for game. Mis-labelled discs in the US and Europe, the british DVD version actually can only be run if you use hacks from the warez-scene if you have nero installed and if the wind blows in the right direction.
