How hard is it to mod a X850XT into single slot?

Microcenter is having a sale tomorrow on X850XT and I'm thinking of picking it up. But the problem is that its dual slot, so it won't fit without some sort of mod (I don't need the dual slot cooler, got an extra Zalman vf700 around). Is the easiet way to just straight out cut it through the middle? Also, I was wondering if there is anyway I can just exchange the metal bar with another one. (say taking the single slot bar off of a 6600gt and fitting it on a 850xt).

Any ideas & suggestion would be helpful.

I think it fits fine in a Shuttle.

I know my 6800 ulta did and from Shuttle.com it offered the x850xt pe in their custon built (HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHA) pcs

check the sff boards or check out sfftech.com's message board.

but i'm pretty sure it fits

I think the heat profile is pretty significant though. How are you going to cool it? This sounds kinda silly, but why not cut the side of the shuttle to fit the cooler? *shrug*

I think they put that dual slot cooler on there for a reason, and it would suck to have stability problems because of the lacking cooler.

If this is PCIE, don't buy it.

A 7800GT is faster anyway, and probably not much more. (not to mention single slot)

$284 7800GT at newegg, free Quake 4

It's a far better card, and if you need/like Quake, that's a sweet deal.

FIXED LINK

Agreed 100%. This card is MUCH faster and is only a single slot card so you can fit it no problem.

My shuttle can only fit an AGP card, so 7800GT is out of the question. And for the person who said something about cooling solution, I said that I have an extra Zalman VF700cu around, so I'll be fine.

I'm just worried about cutting the metal bar to turn it into single card to fit.

okay we weren't sure because the X850XT you linked to was a PCI-Express card.

You say it but you don't mean it.

I mean it, we have too few choices even with both nVidia and ATI offerings for my tastes. I miss the good ol days of many gpus.

You can switch out the metal plate by unscrewing the 1-2 tiny phillips screws thru the PCB and also the screws which lock down the monitor plugs unscrew. If you can find a plate that fits, reattach it in the same way then attach your own cooler

where was the other one? i´m too lazy to look. certainly the AIW looks good for the money.
Changing the metal bar is easy, it is just screwed onto the card anyway. i dont know is the one fromthe 6600 would fit exactly though.

I just recommended an AIWX850XT AGP to someone I play CoD2 with. He asked me what he could get in AGP for under 300. He wanted a 6800GT, be we could not find a single one available or in stock. I asked him if he had any problems going with an ATI card. He had no probs. So we found this great deal. He is happy as a clam. (If clams are really truly happy creatures). He was trying to play CoD2 with a 9600 vanilla. His limit was 640x480!!! to get decent framerates using the sniper rifle scope. If he went to 8x6, his frames would drop into the teens. This game is hard on VPU/GPU's.

Happy New Year!

Fitting it to a single slot is simple. The two methods that spring to mind are;
1: Hacksaw/dremel
2: Find and buy a repalcement bracket.

I miss the good old days when they were called videocards and not Nvidia's term of "gpu".
