How hard to change HSF? Newbie :)

I ordered this motherboard/processor/HSF as a combo and put it right in. I have realized cooling is a problem with this HSF so I ordered a Thermalright SLK-800, a Vantec Tornado fan, and 3g of Arctic Silver III. It should be here in a few days. I looked at the processor and HSF today and it looks like there is some hot glue on there somewhere. What is this for? How hard is it to change the HSF on there? The only thing I didn't build myself was the combo, I am kind of regretting it

Thanks in advance

You do know that fan is LOUD! It will cool darn well but I am wondering if you can tolerate the noise. I have one too and can barely tolerate it enough for some testing. A quiet fan like a vantec stealth is enough when using the slk800. Unless you plan major oc'ing.

For some good install tips with the slk800 see here. You might want to read it all so you are more familiar with the slk.

To apply asIII I suggest you follow these instructions.

Where exactly is this substance at?

How loud is loud? Right now I have 3 cheap 1.99 fans off of Ebay, and 2 Antec 80mm blue LED ones, and I don't mind the noise

Ever hear a 747 take off?

Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration. But it's far louder tha the fans you have now. You'll see.

But will it keep my temperatures down? Right now I'm running around 60 surfing the web, with a case temp of only 28

Not a doubt!

But 60c? Is there good thermal compound between the cpu and heatsink and is it applied evenly and as in the arctic silver instructions? Compound not properly applied will mean higher temp. Just a very thin-even layer is needed. And is the fan blowing down to the cpu?

Also what are you using to check the temp? Most software monitors are rarely accurate. Best way to check temp is to have a temp monitor under the cpu. Actually best way is to have a temp probe between the cpu and heatsink, but that's far more difficult to do.

But no doubt the SLK800 and Tornado will lower your temps much lower than what they are now.

I bought the motherboard combo, the heatsink was already all hooked up. Its wierd because my CPU fan will go idle at any temperature other than above 60, then just shoot to 7000rpm to cool itself off. I don't like this heatsink/fan one bit

Psh, your temps are fine, as long as it's not above 70. You might as well check to see if the heatsink is properly secured. It seems like you already took the HSF off the cpu, since you mentioned it looked like there was hot glue in there. Well, whenever you take off your hsf, you are supposed to reapply a fresh new layer of the "hot glue," which is btw, thermal paste. That might explain the 60 C.

Just do a search in this forum for "hsf", there are already plenty of threads about how to apply thermal paste.

lol...that sounds about right, I've got one on 7volts and it's still loud. man, I need a new fan. and I still have a brand new tornado in the box.

Come on, I'm not that stupid It is actual hot glue, it was on the clip. I emailed the company where I bought the combo and I told them the temperatures and they told me the glue was for warantee purposes. After explaining the problem they told me not to worry about it, my warantee would still be good

Catiaudo I have to disagree with what has been said in this thread. My case temperature is 33C and my CPU temperature runs around 40-43C. Before I changed my CPU fan from a Vantec Stealth to an Enermax adjustable fan, my CPU temps were hovering around 48 and I thought that was too high. Your temps should not be reaching the 60C mark and your CPU fan should be running all the time not when it reaches 60C. When you DO change the heat sink and fan, make CERTAIN that you use a screwdriver that fits the slot perfectly (not too big-not too small). If the screwdriver fits perfectly you won't break anything on the motherboard as I almost did when the screwdriver I used (that was too big for the job) slipped out of the slot. Also, go to the Arctic Silver 3 website and they will tell you exactly how to apply the paste for optimum performance. Good Luck.

I have an 80mm tornado fan and mine just runs full out all the time. I know that my Asus motherboard came with a program that would control the fan speed and I think it was programable for different temps but I didn't install it. Maybe you have something similar and you just need to adjust the settings?

PS- As far as cooling, I cut a blowhole in the top of my case and put in a 80mm fan blowing out. My case temp dropped 20 degrees (F). The cpu also ran a little cooler. Might want to consider it.
