How hard to switch CPUs?

I just got a Dell Vostro 200 with an E6550 and an XPS 410 (refurb) with an E6320. I would like to switch the CPUs. The e6550 is 1333 FSB and the other is 1066. Is this an easy task? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

justa check if the m/b supports 1333fsb. the downgrade is pretty easy, the upgrade depends on m/b support.

Just be sure to clean and reapply a thermal compound before reinstalling the HSF. No software or BIOS updates should be needed.

Wrong quote but, most manufs. recommend a "pea" sized portion of thermal compound. Read the label.

thermal compound should be applied in a very thin sheen. Gooping it will be just as bad (or sometimes worse) as not using enough.

Oh well...I guess it is a moot point. Just found out that Dell XPS does not support 1333 FSB. Bummer!!! I hate the idea of the kids getting the faster CPU...but I really like the XPS case and expandability.

If you're their parent kick them off of it, or trade them computers. Parents don't need an explanation.

Can you switch the whole thing, motherboard, memory and CPU between those two cases? Who has the better video card?

Nope.

XPS 410 is based off the BTX design, Vostro 200 is based off ATX.

GoBucks2007 The XPS 410 does support the Q6600.

Switching out the cpu is pretty easy to do in the XPS 410. Just need some thermal paste, a screwdriver, and a couple of q-tips. If you want details, PM me. I do this a few times a week.
