How high will oil get before it finally either levels off or starts a decline? I believe this point could be as high as 100/barrel given the circumstances with supply, and the fact that our politicians refuse to help the situation...your thoughts and opinions on this?

I predict $100+, easily. The politicians will take us a hair's width from a total economic collapse before doing something about it... and they'll fail. Meanwhile, business as usual, the rich get richer...

This is a free market, no politicians needed. If you don't like it walk.

Not a free market. That energy bill was a big gift of tax breaks to the oil companies...that alone should tell you that this isn't a free market.

There is no reason for it to be as high as it is right now.

I hope you are right, but I see a lot of reasons for it being high...uncertainty due to the Iraq war, a weaker dollar, price gouging by the oil companies, insufficient refinery capacity, supply issues due to a growing China and India, etc.

No reall supply issues because of Iraq at this point.

a weaker dollar,

it is stronger than it was a year ago

price gouging by the oil companies,

I will have to disagree on this. Profits do appear to be up, but they are not excessive/ Remember these profits will either go back to shareholders or new enegy developments. Eitherway the profits go back into the economy.

insufficient refinery capacity,

This could cause higher gas prices, but it will not cause higher oil prices. IF anything it will limit our need for oil.

supply issues due to a growing China and India, etc.

On that we can agree.

Some of you are always so willing to believe in the good-will of the corporations and executives. Like you say, they only exist to make money, so why not gouge if they can get away with it?

I disagree, I think any kind of economic system done 100% is doomed for failure...100% capitalism, socialism, communism or nationalism...whatever the type it will be doomed. You need checks in all systems including capitalism, however I lean pretty hard towards a free or free'er market.

Well, that's not terribly positive thinking. How do you account for the fact that, thousands (perhaps millions) of years later, human beings are still here?

because give me an example where 100% of any system has gone unfaltered? the soviets tried that and it was a dismal failure...the US was/is close to a free market but we even have some socialism type stuff here. Some of it is necessary though I think most of it is waste.

Ah, I see. You're discussing semantics.

This is because "systems" are artificial. They are works of fiction. The reality is what actually exists/occurs.

Good question...

How far with gas prices go before the general economy is hurt? (real inflation)

It's 3.15 a galon for the cheap stuff and 3.29 for premeium in California. As long as we continue to drive suv's and suv's with v8's to make matters worse then there will be almost no end to the demand for this stuff.

Everybody should get say a billion dollars when they are born and be able to borrow on it according to a scientific analysis of all social good and their contribution to it.

Very few of those on the road, relative to SUVs...most of those 4-banger sports cars get good mileage, anyway.

lots of speed demon cars get great mileage...my friend just got 33 mpg in his corvette from okc to dallas at 85mph. My trans am gets upper 20s on the highway...I usually average about 22 in it. Thats not bad mileage and both of those cars are relatively fast.

The only difference between this and what we have now is that (under your system) there would have to be an arbitrary authority who would decide what is good and contributory, as opposed to the democratic and voluntary system we have now.
