How hot are P4s?

I currently own an AMD 1800+ XP and am planning to build a P4 system by the end of this month. One thing I had trouble with is heat in my AMD system. It would drastically change the temp in my small room and sometimes my BIOS thermal sensor would signal an alarm forcing me to shut down and find something else to do ( I set it to alarm at 60 deg). It would typically be between 52 and 57 degrees. I gave that system the PAL8045 heat sink with an 80mm fan, and the case was a LianLi with very efficient airflow, cables nice n cleanly tucked. So what I'm wondering is, do the P4's (specifically a 2.4 GHz) produce as much heat ?

Unfortunatley, they pretty much do. In the beginning days of the P4, they were cooler then the Thunderbird and Palimino cores from AMD. The pluses still are that the P4's have a heatspreader, therby allowing more heat over a larger area and prevents crushing the core. They also have a throttle down feature that slows the clock speed down to prevent meltdown, so even if your HSF fell off, your P4 would still be fine. If your room is that enclosed, I would find some way to get some air circulation or your not going to benefit any from a P4 setup.l

I think either processor will add enough heat your room to be noticable, but the P4 is rated for a higher max power usage. But don't forget there are other heat producing items in your computer. Anything that uses power will produce heat (monitor (a big heat producer), video card, hard drives, optical drives and even your motherboard).

The P4 will throttle to maintain a safe temp though (as Icewind pointed out), so you wouldn't need to shut it down.

By far the biggest thing that heats up my room is my CRT monitor. In winter time though, thats ok.

what cooler did you use with your 1700+ that led to such temp problems? i use a weenie 60mm copper heatsink on mine with a 12cfm fan and get low 50c's temps at load. if i had a slk or something it would be insanely cool i bet, but i don't really care enough to pay for a bigger heatsink currently. if you get a p4 u can get a giant zalman cooler or something, no probs and as long as your case really does have good circulation.. you should be fine unless you live in iraq or something. i dunno how people live in 115+ degree heat.

cpu electrical specs (look at power dissipation)

- unfortunately it looks like the max power dissipation isnt given for the 2.4 P4's, but "typical" is about 60-66W (66W for 2.4C). 2400xp is given as 59 to 62W; 1800xp 46W. Er the 1800->2400xp seems like a much bigger difference than I expected tbh, dunno if i'm reading that right?

I have an LCD monitor so he's no big heat producer. I know my video card and PSU produce alot of heat though!

Yeah the temps in my room can get pretty hot with the comp on, especially because for the comp since it is under my desk and almost in an enclosed area while im sitting and blocking most of the opening!

get a dremel and cut away then. my case is under my desk, but it moves enough air that i can literally feel it and thats at low rpm. well mostly i feel the air coming out the blowhole deflected off the bottom of my desk

P4's run a lot cooler.

My old system, AMD 1400 = 54-70C
New system, P4 2.8c, = 42-60C

Same case & case fans, same power supply, HD's etc etc..
AMD had a Thermaltake Volcano 5.
P4 is retail box, stock cooler.
