How hot is Radeon 9800 non-pro?

I decided to give ATI a try to see what the fuss is about, so I've ordered a "genuine ATI" 9800 non-Pro.

Can any 9800 (non-Pro) owners out there tell me how hot it gets? (Without overclocking or modding.) Say, compared with a GeForce4, or a rough wattage estimate. My understanding is the 9800 should run cooler than 9800Pro due to lower voltages.

Also, I heard of people flashing to 9800Pro BIOS to increase core voltage. Can you reduce the core voltage via BIOS editing?
Thanks
Leo

Core and memory voltage is controlled by regulators on the card and can not be changed in bios or by flashing.

r u sure? i thought the flashing increases the voltage and automatically sets the core/memory to 9800 pro speeds

I don't think the 9800np would have lower voltage to the core or memory than the 9800pro.

Flashing a np to pro changes the clock speeds, of course, but the rumors about flashing raising voltage are not true.

pelikan, is there any particular reason for this? If I recall correctly, for example, GeForce4 ti4200 has slightly lower core voltage than the ti4400 and ti4600.

The bottom line, of course, is "does it run cool enough" which I'll find out soon
Thanks,
Leo

Are you sure about the ti4200 having lower voltage? Because the volt mod on the ti4200 is the same as for a ti4600.
The 9500np, 9700np and 9700pro all have the same voltages. I don't have a 9800np or pro, but I'm sure the voltages are the same. They have the same parts (except sometimes memory), the layout is the same and you use the same value resistors to mod them.
The only case I've read about being different is with I think a Hercules 9700pro that had higher core voltage. There could be others.

Edit: I'm no expert on all this. I volt-modded a ti4600 and a 9500np, so I did a bunch of research to learn how to do it. And I frequent forums where this type of thing is discussed.

Apparently the 9800 NP is so hot, they've stopped making them! Newegg and other retailers have taken them down.

Hehe... poor Nebor, it really isn't his week.

Anyway my brother has a Sapphire 9800NP in his teeenyweeny and quite warm Shuttle Box and it is running just fine and at very high speeds with AA and AF. I'm not sure about undervolting the card though. It's not mine so I don't fiddle with it, just murmur a quiet "I want one too" when I play with that PC

So did you finally get one Michael? Hope it works out well...been thoroughly enjoying mine.

I bought mine two days ago from Newegg. It shipped today. And if you had any command of the nuances of the English language you would know that the "HOT" in this thread is referring to it's operating temperature; not it's sales percentage.

Nebor is well-known on this board as an NVidia fanboy. Not that there's anything wrong w/liking a particular brand; but relentlessly bashing other brands is immature and childish. It doesn't take a degree in Economics to know that competition is a good thing. With no competition, you wind up with a monopoly. Oh, not the game, either.

Hey P.Pete. Yep, I did. It's on its way to me now. I SO hope I get one w/Samsung chips.

And if they DID stop making/selling it, I sure am glad I got one. Remember me saying in the PM how I had a gut feeling they were gonna kill it? +1 for me. :gift:

That's awesome...I'm sure you'll get the one from Samsung...a friend of mine just got his in from NewEgg and it had Samsung on it. Yeah... I've been telling everyone to get them while they can...I just can't see ATI at least not "drying up" the supply until after HalfLife2 comes out so that a bunch of people are forced to buy the 9800PRO for awesome performance. The 9800SE is so much worse...

I'm very happy with my $250 9800 PRO

Just thought id ask, I guess even with the potential new 9800XT coming out soon, the 9800 non-pro would fall in price?

I have a ti4200 (@4600 nicely) , so I can wait - so long as I dont see my friends playing games with AF on ...drools....

thanks txxxx

If you had read the above-referenced thread, you would have seen that Newegg (and some other places) stopped selling the 9800 NP today, which makes your first point irrelevant. I do have to wonder if both the stores in that thread (Newegg & BuyXtremeGear) sold out at the same exact time, or if ATI/Sapphire has put out a recall on the 9800 NP for some reason. I hope not, because I really love my 9800 NP!

BTW, I apologize, Nebor is an Nvidiot. Your attack seemed out of proportion to his comment, but taken in the context of his prior postings, I guess it's reasonable.

<Back to thread>
Although I don't monitor my temperatures anymore, I haven't noticed the system being unstable since I swapped my GeForce 2 for a 9800 NP, with no change in cooling. I guess I'll try to find my temperature probe when I get home today.

None of your attacks were 'in proportion' because I wasn't saying that newegg removed the 9800 np for bad reasons. I was saying that it was so hot that once it wasn't stocked, it flew off the shelves. I mean, who wouldn't go for a card that easily becomes the 9800 Pro for ~100 less dollars.

Buncha jerks.

Hey everyone! Hi Michael

By "hot" I meant physically hot... sorry if the title was not clear enough, resulting in the series of tragic misunderstandings.

If the same resistors and voltage regulators are used, then I guess it makes sense for it to be the same voltage. My reason for 4200/4400/4600 difference was that 4200 seemed to use different ones, and I measured slightly lower default vcore on my 4200.

PS: Nebor, for what it's worth, you made me feel better about buying the 9800 non-pro

The problem with the Zalman's fanless cooler is that it needs some airflow to be effective... like a case fan... and I only have two undervolted fans in my entire case (7v cpu hood fan and 5v PSU outtake). So far, I'm thinking of replacing ATI's cooler with my Alpha PAL15 low-profile heatsink plus another 5v (or 7v) Panaflo. It worked great on my overclocked GeForce4, and with sufficient airflow it should cool the 9800 as well. If 7V Panaflo isn't adequate, I'll use my long-unused Papst @12v (quieter @12 than Panaflo). Whenever I have time to do this, I'll be sure to provide pics

I found posts from several people that stated they discovered that due to the Zalman's large size, it covers pretty much the entire PCB.

It also sits fairly close to the PCB and creates a "blanket effect" trapping hot air over the memory resulting in memory overheating.

While I've not tested this myself, after looking at pics of the product in-use, it certainly does seem plausible.

And LeoV; NO, you cannot run your videocard off a CR2032 watch battery and undervolt it to .00000050 volts resulting in temps 10C below ambient.

Hahah! Gotta give you some grief...afterall, your the only guy I know that spent a year and much $$$$$$ to get a PC that makes no noise, no heat and runs upside down submerged in liquid nitrogen. :Q You rock, Leo.

What do you want to do with the card in terms of heat? I have one and its warm to the touch, but thats it. I think the memory is hotter than the heatsink/fan if that matters...
