How important was your graduation to you (if you were graduating with an Associates)?

I'm graduating from my community college this spring - my parents are excited, but I'm not. I missed the deadline to attend the actual ceremony - not that I really care, because I just dont' see the point. FSU has a junior/senior level campus across the street from my college, and I'll be attending it next year.

I don't really see it as that important - to me, it's like the idiots who dress their kids up to graduate from Elementary School to Middle School; you're just going to have to go right back to class, so what have you really accomplished? My mother and step-father are deployed overseas, so they won't get to see me. I have yet to tell my father and step-mother.

Am I wrong for feeling like this is nothing really special?

I wouldn't think it would be a big deal.

But it's likely that if you're a gay man, your mother makes a big deal out of everything.

And to be honest... I thought this thread was going to be about Alcoholics Anonymous. Of course I don't think you can graduate from AA... once they get you I'm pretty sure you have to give up your soul.

that was my thought too. Ain't a real degree unless it's at least a Bachelor degree from a real University.

i had my HS graduation, i told my older friend to drive me just so i can take pictures with friends, my parents didnt bother to go
for my college graduation, i told my parents to go only to take pictures... since we don't have the opportunity often, i told them not to sit through the stupid ceremony but show up when it's all over (i was in nyu, their 2 ceremonies were both stupid anyway)

My daughter got her Associates recently. We celebrated by going out to Steak & Ale.

I didn't attend my graduation for my AAS degree. I attended graduation for my BS degree. I did not attend graduation for my masters.

The ceremony is pretty cool (or at least it was for my Bachelors degree).

I went straight through a Bachelor's program with a huge gap before going through a Master's program. Hence, I didn't have an AA degree graduation. However, I DID attend both my B.A. and M.S. graduations. When my son graduates from the local CC, I will make it a big deal. That's just me.

In your case, if it doesn't matter to you, then don't worry about it.

Nope. It is what it is. If it's special to you, great. If not, great. I skipped mine as well. I only have 8 months between getting my AA and getting my BA, so I didn't see the point.

People graduate from CCs? I thought they just do their GEs there for cheap and transfer to State U or U.

Some do, but there are such things as Associates degrees. As well as certification programs and technical schools.

An Associates Degree is also a really cheap way to put about half your time working on your BS behind you. $500-1000 a quarter in CC or 3000-10000? Sure, it may not sound as impressive, but once you've got your BS... who cares?

I went to CC, got my AAS, transfered and pretty much only had to do core major classes (GUR sh1t almost completely completed for pennies at CC). The only thing I would recommend going with CC first is really pay attention to what will transfer. I took way too much math and science and only about 80% of my credits were used in my Direct Transfer, so I'm having to finish some lame pre-reqs and electives over the summer.

I went to my Bachelor's Degree Ceremony, listened to the speakers spew their BS, and left. I did it for my parents, since I didn't give a damn.

I didn't attend mine, didn't care. I also didn't attend my Bachelors graduation. Maybe I'm not the graduation type. I've graduated three times in my life (high school, AA, BS), and been to three graduations. Only one of them was actually mine.

I didn't intend to. I went just for my GE. But right before my last semester I went in to see my counselor to make sure I was on track, and he said if I added one class (some bs music history class), I would get an AA in addition to being able to transfer. Not that I needed it since I was getting a BS, but I said "what the hell" and did it anyway. Yay for more useless pieces of paper!
