It doesn't affect me that l. notice.. With Covid and kids becoming adults there are so many variables, regardless I still save a pile every month
Now if I was needing a car I could still afford it but it wouldn't 'feel' right with the premium right now. I'd notice inflation on big ticket stuff

Anybody work for Uncle Sam these days? Do they still do Locality Pay Adjustments? Back when I did, there was a base rate for most of the country but certain cities got a bump. Some were just a little, but some were quite a bit. Same job. Same skills. Even the same people if they relocated.

I noticed that the place I get milk... they actually cut the price. That gels with what the CPI numbers said.

If you look at the fine print, "Fruits and Vegetables" and "Dairy" prices went down in October.... everything else went up quite a bit. Yeah, that sounds pretty Murican.

Dunno what's in the bags, but other than the eggs, the rest is junk food.
Brand name chips and ice cream and premade macaroni salad too. That's always going to be more expensive. Food is cheaper here but we can still get a week's worth fresh produce and ingredients to cook with for ~$55 for 2 people (it used to be ~$45)

I have made meat a side dish instead of the main event at meals. I have also discovered the joy of Aldi ravioli, the squash & pumpkin with sage ravioli drizzled with olive oil & a bit of shredded mozzarella cheese is filling & totally delicious. Also loving their “ Never Any” brand, the chicken sausages are terrific. I get chicken thighs more now & cut way back on beef. More veggies!

Got an issue with my car... didn't even bother calling the place I would normally take it because I think it'd be 3 weeks. Even the place I ended up calling to make an appointment, which seems a bit sketch, scheduled me for the end of next week.

I've been making a lot of my own yogurt over the past few weeks, both to make it cheaper, and also to minimize the amount of sugar in it. I just get the milk close to boiling, then after it cools a bit, pour it into a pop bottle to make 2 quarts. I add a spoon of 'starter culture' from some store bought yogurt. Then I just put it into an insulated sports water container my son has, and put tap water as hot as it will get in there. I swap out the water once, or maybe twice for new hot water. After about 6-7 hours, it is full of a half gallon of yogurt, and I put it in the fridge. Total cost for the 2 quarts of yogurt is about $1.55.

How does it taste, and do you add anything for flavor like blueberries?

I have an Amish store sort of nearby. Distance means I only go about every 2-3 months. They sell all sort of close dated or discontinued stuff. Coffee for less than half store price for example.

Got a 6 pack of Dannon quarts of vanilla yogurt for $5 this past time. I drop it n the freezer and use it all summer. I'll mix in various fruits sometimes and blend it. Sometimes freeze it again to a fro-yo kind of thing.

Our weekly grocery costs seem to have stabilized. That's a real plus!

It definitely tastes a bit more sour than what you get from the store, which takes a little bit of getting used to. And it is slightly thinner, since I don't add any gelatin or corn based thickeners, nor do I add powdered milk products up front like many manufacturers. I do often add strawberry or blueberry pieces. Today I poured about 11 ounces of yogurt in a bowl with a couple of packets of oatmeal with apple bits and nut pieces. It was actually pretty good.

I have one of these: Euro Cuisine YM80 Yogurt Maker,White 9.6 Inch (amazon.com)

I don't use a starter, I just add a cup of plain yogurt (or whatever I have handy) to the milk (need to use stuff with live & active culture).

I like it. I have found most store bought yogurt to be excessively sweet. Yoplait is the worst. The one store yogurt I do really like is Noosa, but that is very expensive.

We have an old Salton model that I got for 3 bucks at a thrift store. Unfortunately, it did not have the lids for the ceramic jars, so I have to use squares of aluminum foil. I looked into buying replacement lids, but cheapest I found was over $20 on Craigslist, and that didn't include shipping.

That's what I meant by starter culture - just a dab of plain yogurt, with the active yogurt bacteria culture in it.

I tried using my own yogurt as a starter, but after doing that 2 or 3 times, the resulting yogurt did not work well. I think it was because there was only a single strain of the bacteria, rather than 3 or more. One of the strains works best when starting out, and then another strain takes over and thickens everything up in the higher acid environment that has formed after a few hours.

Even though I like sour candy and sour drinks like kombucha, I don't really like the resulting yougurt plain - I have to add a bit of fruit to it.
