Speaking of inflation gas is now up to $1.88/litre. It was around $1.50 maybe a year ago. I remember before 9/11 it was actually under a dollar. It went to a dollar as soon as 9/11 happened and never went back down. They had to upgrade all the signs to fit the 3 digits. Only a few times did it go below a dollar.

I think by summer we'll be seeing $2 gas. I wish I could afford an EV but even vehicles are going up in price like crazy these days so I doubt I'll ever be able to buy new, and used EVs just don't exist here. I hardly even see new ones on the road.

Your best bet would be a used Bolt, it can be had for under 30k if you keep an eye out. EV cost $1.5 per 100km if you have the mean to charge at home. Or ride it out till after the election and hope the EV rebate comes back.

Speaking of inflation, we eat very simple so it doesn't affect us "too badly" but din out is stupid expensive fish(single) & chips or a lb of wings now run $16CAD + in a din-in setting with a beer easily run $30.

Da heck, diaper Joe rejected your pipeline so you should be flush.
Pipeline wouldn't have come on line for years, most of the oil produced would be sold on the global market, and we would have lost our 30% oil discount from Canada. Pipeline was a pipedream. We're exporting 38% of the oil the US produces right now. Just tell oil companies to stop doing that and we'll be great!

It would be a 190 km trip for him to go from Timmins, Ontario to La Sarre, QC to even get a new Bolt.

Yeah there is like zero market here for used EVs. I hardly even see new ones on the road. I saw a Tesla once and got all excited, probably from out of town.

I think my best bet is to look at a conversion. When I start building on my homestead property I want to build a nice big garage and eventually get a project car and do an EV conversion. Kind of an ambitious first project though. Probably do a small vehicle first like an ATV. I will want one around the property anyway.

I need to buy a new house! Hard to afford, but it's not getting any easier.

PHEVs (Plug-in hybrids) tend to be cheaper than EVs and are practically pure EVs for many uses. Any used Prius Primes in your area? But would you have any use for them, given the weather there, if there were?

A plug in hybrid is something I might consider too. Even buying new they are reasonably priced. Once I pay off my credit line I can start saving up either way and by the time I have enough money maybe the EV choices will be better too.

As much as the truck is nice I can get away with a non truck if I can find an option that can tow a small trailer.

Maybe a Prius will tempt you someday.

Versatility is money and imo hybrids will still be the more useful tool than full EVs for if a lot of commuting is involved. Since you intend to live in the middle of nowhere...yeah...contingencies for situations matter.

It's not. We either work from home or in my case I have a company truck and fuel card. The increase in food prices is a drop in the bucket.
In short, nothing for us to be concerned about.

Gas is approaching $4/G here. Glad I don't pay for gas :^D I might have enough corn free gas(that I do purchase) to last through grass shortening season, and for my saws. Hopefully prices are better in the fall.

A prius or any hybrid does sound good right about now. I do want to go full EV eventually but a plug in hybrid would be the best compromise price wise I think. Don't necessarily need a truck though but I'd want to be able to tow at least a small trailer. So like 1,000lbs.

Or I can just buy a horse and buggy lol. The Amish and Menonites are actually pretty smart, they are hardly affected by any world events or inflation as they are quite self sufficient.

It's getting pretty rough for me. Looks like I have to keep the Prius for a few more years. The 12v battery is getting old and I bought a battery tender for it. I used to consider it a crime to get under 50mpg during the winter months. I have to accept 49mpg because I mostly do short trips. I use my Discover card 5% cashback for grocery stores until the end of March. After that, I don't know what I am going to do.

Any idea how batteries parked outdoors overnight for several months in sub-zero temps do long term? In a heated garage could work but IDK about out in the driveway!

I suppose you could get some kind of plug-in battery-heater (like ICE vehicles use engine-block heaters in extreme cold) in addition to the charger.

Yeah I do wonder that too and I think it really depends on the thermal management. Was watching videos on the Chevy Bolt and it won't even let you go anywhere if it's cold and it's not plugged in. So if you're parked in the middle of nowhere with no power you're kinda screwed. Ex: mall parking lot or work.

Teslas don't seem to have an issue. Not sure about the others. This would be a big factor for me as -40 is not unheard of. I understand degraded range, and that's fine, but I need it to actually let me drive. Also it needs to be able to charge and properly preheat the battery before it starts charging. The older Leafs are bad for that, they try to charge without heating the battery and it causes damage to the cells. I guess this is all details I'd want to research once I am eyeing a specific brand/model.

Lithium ion batteries do not do well in the cold, so thermal management is a big factor in longevity. If paying 40k+ for a car it really needs to last. 40k seems to be the low end of the pricing for pure EV. The Hyundai Ioniq is around that range.

Either way I have at least a few years before I can afford to buy something else so I have lot of time to think about it, and the tech may also improve.

...what's the interest rate you charge on your loans?

asking for a friend.

I was watching an episode of McCloud from 1974. A bookie went to loan shark to borrow $500,000.

The cost to borrow was 12%....$60,000....per week!

Assuming you lived long enough to still be paying, you would have paid $3,120,000 in interest charges per year - and still owe $500,000!

$3.55 in DFW as of today for regular. Super is $4.15.

The most I ever paid for gas was in 2008, which was $4.45 for regular. This was due to the Chinese expansion and came as a shock to most since we had never seen such a price which as normally about $1.79.

Assuming the worst case scenario of us cutting off Russia oil and maybe a large Opec nation deciding to limit supply to take advantage of the crises, I wonder if $200 per barrel is within the realm of possibility.

If that happens, say hello to $10 per gallon and me walking to work.

Isn't the US a net exporter currently? Time to drill some more!
