I know very little of Samsung's history but I would venture a guess the reason they are so successful is because they are also one of the leading manufacturers of SoCs, memory, displays, batteries, etc.

When you're that vertically integrated it allows for two key things- a lot easier of a time at innovating, (because you are more intimately familiar with the new manufacturing technologies, better in-house prototyping, etc) and also an economic advantage so you can produce your own components cheaper than nearly anyone else can

Same reason Intel has an advantage being both a chip developer and manufacturer

It's not to say that being vertically integrated always going to be a great success story, but when if/when you pull it off right it's hard for anyone who needs to rely on external suppliers to compete

I think this is the main thing. Most here know about Asus and where they came from as the primary then-nameless mobo manufacturer for Dell and others, before branching out and branding themselves as their own complete device company.

As long as they have been making microwaves for decades, Samsung has also had it's hands in the physical memory and chip world, often as the primary manufacturer in the guts of other devices; Apple for example...which is why Apple is always on their asses.

I believe they are still the primary manufacturer of physical memory in the world, no?

Be thankful that a company like Samsung is around. Otherwise, you would be paying an arm and a leg for a shittier iPhone or still using a Blackberry. Dominant competition helps us consumers.

Imagine a company like Sony, but that doesn't make proprietary parts that only work in their own electronics and you have Samsung. Sony does Betamax, Memory Stick, Cell, etc. Samsung did memory, flash, ARM and AMOLED. Couple that with every appliance imaginable plus a little help from the South Korean government.

I don't think Samsung has a building where they make things that also has suicide nets around it. Sup Foxconn?

Sister has a Samsung smartphone and it seems nice. Really nice camera too. About their SSDs? I'd a little leery about them since I've seen countless posts about them failing in all kinds of tech forums.

The fact that they've been a maker of components that go into all kinds of electronics has been mentioned and I think that is a large part of the reason.

Furthermore, aside from the Dell Streak(?), I think it's also because Samsung was one of the first manufacturers that pushed larger and larger screens in decent to very good phones... it was so successful that even Apple eventually relented and finally offered a phablet sized version of their latest phones

Phablets are a distinct segment of the smartphone market that has its adherents and I think Samsung deserves much of the credit for that.

After the Korean War, South Korea was decimated. They were starving and poor. The saying " bali bali" which means quick, not slow was coined at this time. So, the bali revolution began. This meant that South Korea would stop at nothing to be a powerhouse nation.

How did companies such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai come to dominate the market? Thru hardwork, innovation and willpower. And it happened very quickly.

How did they get where they are today? How did they managed to come up with these technologies.

The govt of Korea had alot to do with it with generous assistance under the chaebol model of industrial policy.

I had a few of their old SpinPoint drives and they were pretty solid. You can read about all types of SSD's failing if you look long enough.

Because my s6 can make blow out of its mini-usb port and knows where to automatically find hookers cheaper than siri whenever I say the code word "blowhard".

Also extreme amounts of government assistance pumping cash into the largest corporations because the government and corps were extremely heavily linked meaning that the welfare of the nation was directly correlated to how well the corporations were doing.

Samsung was in Korea.
Japan was no longer a "developing economy", Japan was a first world country with ifrst world wages and first world regulations.

Korean was a developing nation, Samsung may have been the "cheap alternative" in its early days, sort of like how a Toyota would be seen as a cheap knockoff in its early days. But, they improved their quality over a decade or so, when all the competition was "cost cutting" to imcrease their bottom lines. What happened is the competition who was cost cutting lowerred the quality of their products, and, samsungs improvements brought them to a point where they got some serious market penetration.
Then, they expand capacity, and more or less drown the competition. Now, Companies like Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony, and the like are all crippled. Its essentially the same thing the Japanese consumer electronics companies did to the American ones. Its sort of like what American factories did compared to most of the rest of the world in the early 20th century.

Outsourcing/offshoring etc.
