How is the FPS under the new beta D3d driver with S3TC for Unreal Tournament?

Are the new renderers for UT worth downloading? I would like to get some feedback on the new s3tc capable d3d renderer especially... currently i'm running Loki opengl renderer and am really happy with it...If D3d still stutters, i'll stick with Loki...please share your experiences

I tried it, D3D gave me a bunch of flashing textures in the menu, and OpenGL was just a black screen. Needless to say, I am back to the regular renderers. Oh, BTW, I have a Radeon, maybe Nvidia/3dfx cards will work better?

"If D3d still stutters, i'll stick with Loki..."

Haven't tested yet but Daniel Vogel coded the dlls, he is the same guy that handles the Loki dlls(in other words, at least the OpenGL.dll is his latest version).

I just installed the 4.36 patch and the OpenGL patch last night; I left the D3D alone since I won't use it anymore, and I get an average of 45 - 60fps in OpenGL with S3TC. The game plays silky smooth except for one thing: when I pick up a gun the game seems to pause for a split second and then pick up (I think it has to skip some frames to catch up). Other than that problem it is smooth and looks incredible! I think the pause brings the frame rate down to 45 fps average, because it usually plays around 60 fps until I pick up a gun.
I have an ATI Radeon 32mb DDR, Athlon TBird @ 700mhz, 256mb of RAM. My AGP Aperature size is set at 128mb in the bios. I have the CacheSizeMegs set for 64mb. I also replaced the OpenGL section of the UnrealTournament.ini file with the setting provided. I have precache off.
If anyone knows a way to limit the frame loss when I pick up a gun in UT, let me in on the secret. Thanks.

Here is a link to the new D3D/OpenGL Beta Drivers.

The S3TC textures are on the second UT CD. Just run the setup on this CD to instal them.

Someone please post the D3D S3TC enabled settings for the UnrealTournament.ini file?

Thanks!

EDIT: Blue Weasel helped out first.

As stated above, If you want performanc and or s3tc. Stick with LOKI. These drivers are completly BETA. D3D cuts perfomance without s3tc enabled by around 1/3 from that of the UT 436 patch.

Just use Loki's OGL until Epic get's caught up with Loki

btw just for puree speculation. Has anyone elsee thought about that this time Last year, Epic and S3 teamed together to enable S3TC on Savage2000???

At the same time Epic made a deal with S3 to NOT include Texture Compression(S3tc and the likes) in D3D and OGL.

Now this happened LAST JANUARY. This is THIS JANUARY LoL! I'm speculating that s3 bought them out for 1 year <g>

any1 elsee care to agree?

Using Epics D3D ~30fps
Using Epics OpenGL ~70fps
Using LOKI's OpenGL ~73fps

This what I get Using s3tc textures.

So far I can't tell a visual difference between the OpenGl's

Just what I found

anyone with a 5500 try the D3d patch yet?

Dave?

Seems on Rev's site that there is a pretty substantial jump in performance in D3d with the 5500 using the 2nd CD textures. Looking for some other experiences here.

Yea I've got the large textures happening on my V5, you really have to use 32bit colour to get the best effect. Oh and you need to use Geometry assist in the driver options to get it to work at all.

As far as speed differences go there isn't a whole lot that I could see, I use v-sync at 85hz on my monitor, and a lot of the time it just sticks there in glide or D3D, except where the scene complexity rises and the cpu limitation creeps in (if you can call a p3700@980 a limitation)

Overall I'm pretty impressed with this, It's cool to gawk at the detailed textures, especially CTF-Face. It's not quite as smooth as glide, a few hiccups here and there, and a couple of graphical glitches, especially viewing weapons in fog, and the invisible flag in CTF.

It is ever so slightly unstable though(like UT is 100% stable at the best of times)

I'll still use glide to play on line simply for the stability and smoothness.
