How is this fair.

In my STA 131C course here, the prof failed over half the class, 60% of the class got a D or an F, the average on the final was a 30%. How is this fair, doesn't he legally have to curve the class to a B- or C+.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA.

No. 60% of your class is apparently too stupid to get help or study.

If a class full of med students were in a similar situation, would you be comfortable if they got graded on a curve?

How can your school certify via your degree that you know the information you went there to learn when on average, the people in your class know only 30% of the material?

Stop posting on ATOT and study.

I would disagree with this.

Routinely my class averages are sub 50% and are EXTREMELY bell curved.

I think profs make exams way to hard, but thats my opinion.

Legally?

SHow him a contract that he's signed and I'm sure he'll budge.

Same thing happened in a Calculus class I took in college - only more like 70% failed. Turns out every student that failed was offered a "withdrawal" from the class so GPA's were not affected, everyone who received C- or higher was bumped up an ENTIRE grade point. The University stuck it to the professor after that...

Remember that guy named StatsManD or something like that and how he was banned? He was that guy that got offended by the Christmas tree near town hall, if I remember. Looks like he returned and is actually not very good at statistics. I think double accounts constitute a ban if I am right, huh?

Illegal? No. Is it a bad idea it happened in the first place? Yes. Either his teaching is inadequate, the test was too hard, or the students weren't "Ready" to take a class of that caliber, but when that many people fail, something's wrong.

There's no such thing as an exam that's too hard as long as it covers the course material. Kids expect tests to be too easy. You're not in high school anymore.

At my my undergrad chemical engineering program, in the sophmore Applied Math class (end of sophmore year) - it was typical for 50-60% of the class or more to fail with a D or F. Anything lower than a C- and you could not take any upper level ChemE course without Department permission. My profs pretty much just made the class as hard as necessary to fail at least 50%... if more failed, too bad.

My year, one guy got an A, two folks got B's, I got a C+ (79%, still a C), and everyone else in the class got C's or worse. The guy that got the A changed majors from Applied Math at the end of his junior year to start over in Chemical Engineering (good decision too because he makes bank now).

I forgot where it says in the constitution that your professor is legally obligated to curve your grade up.

My Chem 101 class had an approximately 70% fail rate (D or less). The professor was Hungarian and nobody could understand a word he was saying or read what he wrote on the boards. I'm not naturally talented with Chemistry and even though I busted my butt and worked hard in the chem labs, I came out with a 69.4. Bastard wouldn't even give me a tenth of a point when I went to visit in his office.

I have to say though...I never considered a "legal" option over that.

Sure you can make an essay too hard.

On my last pols exam there were 4 essays with no way for the kids to finish writing for all of the topics in time.

We're not talking about just math here, if it was math I understand what your saying.

But it's not quite that simple.

Proof 1: Link

Proof 2: Link (still complaining about class)

Proof 3: His profile under StatsManD says he's from Davis, California. His user name is now UCDAggies, a representation of UC Davis, where StatsManD was from. Pretty odd coincidence, huh?
