If this is the first class this happened with, you're screwed. It it happens in all his classes, the Dean is going to want to speak with him.

I can't resist piling on - What a Maroon!!! I remember my Engineering Physics class. 50%+ failure rate, and no one whined like this. It was known as a "Make or Break" class; if you failed, you obviously weren't meant to be an engineer. Have you considered that perchance you don't have what it takes to be a math major?

Proof 1: Link
Proof 2 (still complaining about class)

Proof 3: His profile under StatsManD says he's from Davis California.
His user name is now UCDAggies, a representation of UC Davis, where StatsManD was from. Pretty good coincidence, huh?

 Good work. Now mods, please ban this tard and save ATOT.

Has anyone PM'd the mods? The light is on....

That has got to be the most stupid thing I have ever heard.
Might not be the most stupid thing, but it definitely makes my top 5.

Some profs are just like that. Sometimes for good reason, too. Maybe the material's just hard. It's not the prof's obligation to pad your marks if you don't have it down pat. You've gotta find out beforehand (ratemyprofessor.com helps) and be prepared, or you're screwed!

I'm not saying that you're a bad student OP, but this sense of entitlement is part of what's wrong with students nowadays. They want to be diapered, spoon fed and not think in the least bit critically.
A lot of profs and some of us grad TAs here have observed that the good students are as good as ever and the bad ones are just as bad as ever. It's the a quality of the average student that's taken a dive.

There's two ways to test - one is 'knowledge of basic material' and might as well be pass/fail. This is the kind of testing nearly all high schools, and most University/college courses use.

It might have enough discriminabilty to let you assign letter grades with some confidence, but generally tests very little in the way of 'understanding'.

With marks being such a big deal, a much better testing regime is 'difficult' tests. The ones so many students complain about, but that actually make you think. I've heard anecdotally (but from math professors) that a good, hard test, that no one can finish, and that 'A' students get about 50-60% on is generally ideal for the purposes of ranking students and testing real ability. Then you just bell the class (if you want consistent standards, you can set the curve before you grade the tests, so 'this term' has grades that can be compared directly to 'last term', etc).

As a student, I was always pretty bright, but not very diligent. The reult was a very significant negative relationship between the class average and my rank in the class, so that as tests got harder and tested less knowledge and more application, I did better.

Except in calculus - I never had more than a passing (pun intended) understanding in calculus, and my rank actually dropped when the tests were harder.

..yes compassion is in order here. it's all the teacher's fault. especially if he uses red ink to grade the test.

The mods know. There's a thread in Forum Issues (or at least there was earlier this week). DVK916=StatsManD=UCDAggies.

Edit: The mods locked the the Forum Issues thread with no response. I guess they don't feel like enforcing the rules. But don't disagree with a mod when she's PMSing, that'll get you banned.

Bastard wouldn't even give me a tenth of a point when I went to visit in his office.

I have to say though...I never considered a "legal" option over that.

My Calc 2 class was like that. NOBODY could understand the Prof. not to mention she was gone at least once a week. hell there was a span of 2 weeks she s showed up ONCE.

but she still gave test on the dates the syllabus said. about 85% failed. I know nearly every one was complaining to the dean about her.

when the class was over the dean removed the failed grades and let everyone retake the class for free. Oh and t he Prof was not welcomed back.

Funny, that's what StatsManD said! Man, you have to be the stupidest troll I've ever encountered. You don't even make an effort to prevent people from connecting you to your previous usernames. When the mods finally quit sitting on their thumbs and ban you and you have to come up with a new username, here's some advice: pick a username that isn't related to information we already know about you, don't post threads with personally identifying information, don't post the same types of threads all the time (although you're doing better - you've changed your theme from atheism to communism this time around). And lose some weight.

Dude, you are the most pathetic person in the world. Congratulations on having an entitlement attitude that makes the worst trust fund babies jealous. I guess there are people worse than you though, some feel that it is unfair to use red ink or give F grades (instead an E is failure, wtf)

Drop out of college now, upper division courses will be a lot worse. Maybe your school does upper division numbering differently than most?

Professors are not required to do anything. If they feel you deserve an F, then that's what you're getting. Look back on this test in a year and you'll realize that it was probably a good call on the professor's part. If this is material you should know, then the bad grade is to snap your ass into gear so that you'll study a lot harder next time.

Or the students are lazy. That's one that you missed and doesn't really fall under any of the categories you listed, but it's probably exactly what happened here.

If 60% got a D or an F, then 40% got an A, B, or C. Not all students are created equal.

That's not unheard of. If there are still students doing well despite the majority of the class failing, then the professor has every right to fail the majority of the class.
