I'm a little iffy on this one, but I don't really have any knowledge of this part.

I always thought that people who asked for an ingredient to be held were helping the restaurants bottom line, and that it would be somewhat evened out by the people that ask for extra.

I understand that they would have to throw anything open away at the end of the day, but they would have to do that anyway. If they're throwing too much away, they simply need to not open as many.

Think about it: Taco Bell has all the ingredients sitting there waiting to be assembled into the different tacos and stuff.
If I order a taco, and tell them to hold the lettuce and cheese, they simply don't put it in there....it actually saves them money. They don't have to throw the lettuce and cheese allotted for that one taco away.

Edit: Besides, even if you ask for something to be held out and they have to throw it away, you still get charged for it.

could be part of their contract, but i freaking doubt it. you could ask a lawyer to take a look at things, but given the fact that it's a fast food chain employee, you would probably want to get a bunch of employees together to do this (in fact, you might want to, in order to make your case look better).

Yeah... you're right. They still charge you for it, that's the key point. They couldn't possibly be losing any more money than if they had actually put it on your item.

Buuuuut.. he's definitely right about the pricing thing. Just listen to the advertisement disclaimers. They will always say price and participation may vary by location.

I'll grant you that, but it's not as widespread as he leads us to believe....and regardless, he's still full of it about the initial topic.

Each taco bell is run differently. Managers decide the pay and cost of food.

Bullsh1t. While managers have a little leeway in pay, they have no say in how much they charge for food at a chain like Taco Bell.
What planet are you people from?

It's the same way for almost ALL fast food chains. They are franchises, they can charge whatever the fsck they want.

You're failing to account for the fact that for many of the larger chains such as Taco Bell, while they are franchised and the parent corporation may own few to none of the stores themselves, they often sell franchises to other corporations which have contracts to own all of the franchises in certain areas. Therefore it's quite likely that all the restaurants in a geographic area are owned by the same company, which while it not the parent franchisor, is still a corporation which owns many of said franchises and likely has the same pricing at each one. That's obviously not always the case, but among the larger known franchises these days, you're more likely to find corporate franchises than you are independent ones, AFAIK.

Why shens? Why wouldn't a national multi million dollar company risk their reputation over 5 cents? Makes perfect business sense...

I know at least with Wendy's, there's a difference between the two store types. Franchises can do whatever the hell they want for the most part (within the agreement). They're typically only in malls and select locations and their prices can vary widely. "Corporate" stores have to follow all pricing and procedures handed down from the regional office.

This is an old internet rumor. I've heard it plenty of times, but I've had friends who work at Taco Bell and said they don't do that. Why would they deduct pay for holding tomatoes? That doesn't cost the company anything.

While I can't vouch for the original OP, I can definitely say that I've had siblings who worked for fast food and they complained about getting ripped off on their paychecks every time.

Pay reduction if customers order water? That's the most bullshit call of them all.

That would defeat the purpose of a chain.

well, mcdonald's has different prices for their food. even in the same state and region.

Ahhhh, so THAT explains it! Every time I go to Taco Bell, I say "No tomatoes!" And, they always put tomatoes on my food. I just pick them off. I didn't realize they did that to avoid a 5 cent deduction on their pay.

OP, That ^^ is exactly what would happen with such a policy. And, people would start complaining. And, Taco Bell headquarters would wonder why so many people complained about their food being made wrong in a certain area... and all it would take is one worker to mention this policy and the policy would be stopped in its tracks.

edit: I'm not saying whether the policy is legal or illegal. But it's a stupid policy. I certainly wouldn't eat again at a restaurant when I found out they intentionally made my food wrong to avoid having their pay docked. And, once they start doing it intentionally, that opens them up for all sorts of trouble - what happens when the child who's allergic to an ingredient orders something with none of that ingredient?? Lawsuit! That's not to say that this policy couldn't exist either; there are plenty of idiots running businesses out there. However, this policy couldn't possibly last very long without driving customers away for various reasons (either employees are going to be irate when someone causes them to lose pay, else employees are just going to ignore what the customer wanted - that's the nature of such a system.)

I also know several people that work(ed) at Taco Bell. This is bull. They never had anything like that deducted from their paychecks.

how about a scan of their pay stub showing these deductions? should be an easy task, and would go far in proving youre actually telling the truth.

No it doesn't they still all serve the same food items, mostly the same.

This is how all franchises are fun, each store decides it own prices and such.

One taco bell here a Taco Supreme is 99 cents, and a at another a few miles away it is 1.20.

At one a Burrito Supreme is more expensive than a grilled stuff burrito, but at another it isn't.

youre almost correct. every franchise is different, since they are owned by different people. the franchise sets the store pricing and rules, not the store manager. they are just a puppet and food wrangler for the owner. they set the pricing at whatever the franchise tells him to. if the owner sees better profits in one neighborhood over another, he may skew the pricing to widen that margin. manager has nothing to do with that.

Okay... to start with. The OP is the previously banned troll DVK916.
Next, he is lying about the pay deductions. Taco Bell pays their employees at or close to minimum wage. Minimum wage laws are based on cumulative pay. That means that if an employer pays at or near minimum wage, and then forces the employee to work "off the clock" or to pay for their uniforms or to have their pay deducted IN ANY WAY such that ((pay - deductions)/hours) results in less than the minimum wage rate, then the employer is in violation. As Taco Bell was THE employer that lost the landmark case that settled this issue about a decade ago (because they paid employees minimum wage but then required them to "police" the parking lot/grounds off the clock right after their shifts), it is extremely unlikely that they would push this issue again, especially in the state of CA.
And yes, almost all fast-food chains are franchises, however, the franchisees are still usually bound to follow a considerable amount of corporate rules/guidelines, including pricing guidelines.
AND... holding the tomatoes would save the franchisee money, not cost them. Tomatoes are expensive.

Anything else?

And could the mods please verify the OP's IP address and re-ban as necessary? Thanks.

We ran the IP. No match. The rope will take it's course in due time.

ya, its not like they lower the price of a taco when you ask for no lettuce.
