How is viewing angle measured?

Say an LCD monitor has a viewing angle of 170degrees. What exactly does that mean. I mean isn't 180 degrees half a circle, so wouldn't that mean that if it had a 180 degree view then you could view it perfectally at any vantage point in front of it? If so does that mean with 170 degree angle that only 5 degrees on each side would be unviewable. Meaning you would basically have to view the monitor aalmost completely from the side in order to get a distorted picture? Or am I just talking crazy?

So is viewing an LCD monitordifferant for some people then others or no matter who views it as long as they stay within the 170 degree viewing angle, they will see the picture exactly as it was meant to be seen?

I am assuming you have a CRT monitor right now. If you stand above it (but in front of it just enough to see it) and look down, that's how it'll look on an LCD.

or if it had a 145 degree viewing angle, whos to say the unviewable 35 degrees is on the sides? ....

just make sure that 35 degrees that you can't see isn't the middle (or watching from the front) that could be bad

Hahaha, that would be the way to market an LCD

So since the dell 1800FP has "Viewing angle of 160° horizontal and vertical" it will be very hard to get it too look distorted. Basically as long as you are any where near in the center of it, it will look fine?

Yes, it should be just fine..unless you are trying to look down on it from directly above..
