Football hits are hard, but those guys wear full padding and helmets. Now with the clamping down on head injuries, any little knock to the head and the player is carted off the field.

Rugby players get whacked without pads and suffer bone-crunching tackles and head injuries are common and the rugby helmets pale in comparison to the NFL ones.

What's more, there are more countries that play Rugby and take that sport seriously than there are those that take handegg seriously (really there's only one country that takes handegg seriously).

While I'm glad that Rugby 7's is going to be in the Olympics, let's be honest, only three countries really take the sport seriously - England, South Africa and New Zealand. I guess you can add in Australia, but they have to contend with Aussie Football.

Baseball was axed because the MLB didn't want to stop their season to let their players play. Since they couldn't have the best players playing, the IOC decided it wasn't worth it and dropped it.

That's just load a bull you know. Other international sports do not send their best players to the Olympics and the US has been fielding college all-stars and some pros for awhile before MLB began sending "better" players.

no BB and Softball are out of the 2016 olympics as well, IIRC for being TOO American, which its is however we dont dominate it in the olympics as many MLB players are not from the US. Softball is another matter.

I guess it's our fault for calling our national competition the World Series.

Actually, my good sir, I am not an anatomyologist, but I am sure that is not his hand that your arrow doth pointeth at!

In soccer you're specifically not allowed to send your best players.

How is it BS? The IOC wanted star power in the Olympics, MLB wouldn't "play ball" so baseball was ousted. It's really like an F you to MLB from the IOC president it seems. What it ultimately boils down to is money. The major league stars in the Olympics is much more marketable than a bunch of college and amateurs that no one knows. They want the big names they can sell.

The IOC even said that for baseball to come back, the best players need to be there.

This is from the IOC president.

"To be on the Olympic program is an issue where you need universality as much as possible," Rogge said. "You need to have a sport with a following, you need to have the best players and you need to be in strict compliance with WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency). And these are the qualifications that have to be met.
"When you have all that, you have to win hearts. You can win the mind, but you still must win hearts."

Those "hearts" must be won over when the IOC meets in October 2009. The IBAF and Major League Baseball are among those lobbying in full force during the Games and will be all the way up until that decision is made. In addition to baseball and softball, the committee will be choosing among squash, karate, golf, roller sports and rugby. Baseball and softball are mutually exclusive, not a package deal.

Major League Baseball once again did not permit its players to be on the U.S. team, which was eliminated from gold-medal contention on Friday night by Cuba. The U.S. roster is comprised of 23 Minor Leaguers plus San Diego State junior pitcher and top 2009 Draft candidate Stephen Strasburg. Rogge said that must change.

"Yeah, it's a big factor," he said. "We have [Roger] Federer, [Roger] Nadal in tennis, LeBron James in basketball. We have the best cyclists. Ronaldinho is here in football. We want these guys at the Games. We're not saying it should be an entire Major League team, but we want the top athletes here at the Olympics

Thanks for elaboration, at first I assumed that you were trolling. I agree with you on some of your points. I personally prefer baseball to football and it is one of the toughest sports to argue regarding the player's skill or athleticism.

It's still pretty stupid to suggest soccer is even remotely as physical as American football. Soccer may be more physical and dangerous than people give credit, but it's laughable by comparison.

Then why is it that boxing is an Olympic sport?

You're probably more likely to get a concussion playing football than Olympic boxing.

And LOL at everyone pissed that other people like sports they don't, or don't like sports they do.

also how the hell are you gonna have a football tourny with a huge number of teams only playing 1 game a week?

^^This^^

BTW: (American) Football IS played outside the USA. Canada and Europe have leagues.

If football were as widespread as soccer, with similar parity, it would be better suited to a World Cup type event. (I'm not sure how the Olympics pull off soccer in such a short time frame, even though they begin competition before the opening ceremonies.)

because it would only be another gold for the USA

they need to add more "sports" along the lines of pingpong to make it fair for the rest of the world, such as Air Hockey and Foosball, maybe even Dodgeball.

While they are at it lets go ahead and add darts, bowling, poker and pinball.
