I live in an area where the main income is from hog and turkey farms, so we have the processing plants to go along with that.
If you ever worked at one you might want to become a vegetarian overnight.
I don't think most people want to know what is in their food.
Hot dogs are minor compared to things like bologna , vienna sausages, treat, potted meat.

My niece was talking about how she loved being a vegetarian and how she was losing weight eating jello for desert.
That was until I informed her of the source of gelatin.

My grandfather worked for a hot dog producer briefly after the war. He said it was a long time before he would eat hot dogs again.

My college roommate had worked in a tannery - I've taken the hides off of animals before. He made the "skkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrkkkkkkk" sound of scraping the inside of a hide, then told me that jello was pretty much just reconstituted "that stuff" with sugar and artificial flavoring- YEARS before I could eat jello without thinking about that.

I mean, I think most people knew that a hot dog was really fine "meat paste" shoved into a casing. There's no part of the animal that has that texture, after all (well, the kidneys do, a little bit, but people actually buy those to eat them).

That process was not so bad, thank you for sharing. A friend of mine received a personal tour of a small hot dog plant by the owner when he applied for a mechanical engineering position in the late 1980's. My friend stated the meat puree needed to sit for three days to properly ferment. The puree was uncovered for these three days. The owner then started up the mixers and grinders, and my friend distinctly heard the screams of rats as they were mixed in with the puree.

This was a small hot dog manufacturer that I hope is now out of business.

My friend decided not to eat processed meat anymore, only whole cuts of meat that have not been ground down. Anything can be in those processed meats.

Yup, which makes it fun to guess what kind of animals went into the "all beef" hot dogs.

A certain amount of filth (poop, hair, insects, and so on) is expected and allowable. Besides, every bit of rat is pure profit (it's free filler, afterall).

A quick goggle failed to find lab results for hot dogs however dig these of other foods and particularly hot dog and hamburger buns which are repulsive enough before adding the offal/filth/rat puree.

That looked like the end of a soft serve machine. Yum, soft serve hot dog. Wow, I would totally buy that.

By the way, the video is pretty cool. Shows how much innovation it takes to make a hot dog. Just think about what goes into the most simple things made in your life. You would simply be amazed.

Also, the volume of items made in this country alone is staggering. Over 100,000,000 soda (pop) cans made every single day. Simply staggering the number of things we produce as far as quantity.

Roosevelt fed King George VI & Queen Elizabeth hot dogs, she ate them with a knife & fork lol. If lips & anus are good enough for kings & presidents, they are good enough for me

Can/will eat with almost anything but two preferrable toppings, chili or stadium mustard. Street vendors in C-town still sell the old style ones you could get at Cleveland Muni, steamed dogs/buns served fresh.

IIRC, Nathan's Famous hot dogs are all beef plus just a few other other ingredients.
No pork, no chicken, no corn syrup.

This is why I almost never watch Youtube video with the sound on. People are idiots when it comes to quality, and most don't edit their clips.

The great ones are montages of various snippets of Internet video or TV shows. One clip plays at a soft whisper, and then the next one is so loud that it's distorted beyond what any sound card can possibly render.

Read the comments to videos on Youtube, then think: These people actually have computers. These people will post things to Youtube. These people are probably barely competent enough to order food from McDonalds. And now they're trying to use software.

The food I buy my cat costs more than hotdogs, and I bet it's a higher quality of meat too.

I see a vision.

It's a giant plant just like the one linked making hotdogs, and the last step of the assembly process splits off the dogs into 4 groups all from the same assembly line. Group 1 is labeled Hebrew National, group 2 is labeled Ballpark, group 3 is labeled Oscar Mayer, and group 4 is labeled Purina ONE.

How it's Made is not that great of a show anyway. They use outdated machinery/equipment and I laugh every time I catch it on tv.

I mean c'mon, simply made products and they use a machine that takes 10 times longer to make than it should! IF you've seen the speed of some machines here in the US making the same exact product, you will cringe while watching this show!

Isn't it a Canadian based show? Eh?
