Maybe a combo lock is a requirement idea.

If the dude was determined enough to kill his mom to get at her gun I doubt a combination lock would have provided much additional deterrent. Even if she had a super expensive gun safe he still could have eventually gotten into it considering he would have physical access to it and few time constraints.

And who knows, she may have been a really terrible parent for all I know, but it’s kind of hard to fault the mom who was killed for letting her son get access to her guns.

Not trying to fault her. I do think your minimizing the difference between a key and combination locks. In his particular case, if he's smart enough to hack government servers, a little time on the internet may have yielded guidance for safe cracking. Yet, he had to access the gun to kill her with it.

The mother is equally responsible. Knowing this kid she should have removed her guns from the house. Having that kind of access make it easy for him to reek havoc on a whim. The tougher it is to obtain a gun the likely hood decreases.

If a professional car thief wants you car not much will stop them. Theft deterrent systems are designed to stop the random knucklehead. That's why manual shift cars have a lower rate of theft. Knuckleheads don't know how to drive them.

IMO the majority of childhood depression comes from sh***y parenting so no wonder he had guns. Taking away the guns is not the answer. Taking away the kid from the sh***y parents is a start. Get them out of that environment.

I'm sure there's going to be some idiot parent out there who abuses their child yet refuses to accept that they are the cause of their child's depression. Oh well. There are more forms of abuse than just physical.

The parents refuse to accept responsibility and send the kid to doctors to pump it full of meds to *fix* the problem, then have the nerve to pretend that they're victims for having a depressed child... anything except accepting responsibility for raising a child right.
I suspect that there is more going on in this particular case. The shooter and his younger brother were put up for adoption by their birth mother. The brother was recently involuntarily committed to a mental health facility. My thoughts are that their mother was a drug abuser during her pregnancies and that the two boys were born with brain damage as a result.

This is what happens woth red WH, house and senate- they WILL do favors for their base
Well Trump couldn't repeal Obama's mental health related gun orders fast enough. The GOP must adhere to the burger king ideology when serving the gun industry...have it your way have it your way.

It always seems to be the same old case, mentally ill or depressed etc.. child owns Semiautomatic rifles and guns with the parents allowing ownership of such weapons and ammo.
.

children cannot own any firearms. minimum age is 18.

the dude was 19. Old enough.

Not im my house. If I had a kid with mental issues, no guns period I don't care what the law says, I am not giving you money to buy guns and you will not be owning any guns. He lived under their roof rent free, they could have taken that gun and not let him keep the gun and ammo.

Did he even have a job? where did he get the money to buy the gun and ammo?

I feel bad for the store being slammed for selling him the AR-15, they are not the problem it is the adults around Nikolas Cruz who are the problem and let him own these weapons.

Here's a couple of reasonable compromises from a pro-gun person.

It's time we made it mandatory that all mental health professionals report violence prone patients to the FBI database for background checks. We can also change the law that the age requirement for semi-auto rifles is raised to 21 nationwide.

I'm fine with those 2 items.
What about those with mental issues that are not actively seeing a mental health professional? Any screening for them at time of purchase?

Weaksauce.

Make it mandatory that any person regardless of age, be required to pass a mental health screening before being allowed to purchase a firearm.

That would be a compromise.

Your proposal is a piece of shit.

I wouldn't support your proposal and it'll never pass. You have suggested (no sauce) nothing gets done and it's the same old, same old. Congratulations on another loss.

Why not? Are school shootings your only goal? Or do you want to stop most mass shootings?

His mom died from flu last year, and dad long ago.

He was not living under a bridge. The adults who let him move in allowed him to bring his aresenal of weapons and ammo, knowing his history snd they were even planning on sending him to a shrink.

All they had to do is lay down the law, you can come in but weapons have to be disposed. They chose to take the path of least resistance.
