I have about 20 apps on my iPhone from 3rd parties, 5-6 of those are paid apps.

I didn't learn about any of those apps by searching/browsing the app store. Frankly, I doubt many people do it that way. I find out about the apps through advertising, word of mouth, the media, etc. Sure, I might check out the reviews before I grab the app but that is about it.

If you think about it, the app store is pretty much like the internet. There is a tremendous amount of crap out there and relatively few good web sites but somehow it managed to thrive. Go figure.

I happen to own 2 iPhones, so it's not because I hate apple. It's because the App store sucks. It would be alot better if there was a way to filter out all the small time junk apps and just keep the ones released by legitimate companies like the weather channel, cnn, garmin, etc....

Having an option to remove all the apps made by 24 year old Pete in his moms basement would get rid of 99.999% of the crap on there.

Google lists of apps pertaining to what you are looking for then goto the app store and download what you want??

App Store is never going to bust. The creme floats to the top so it don't matter if there are a bazillion apps or not.

I'd like to know first if there are statistics on how many iPhone-app exclusive software development firms there are vs. traditional PC firms.

The App store brought on a spike in software developers trying to reach a new market, and new markets come around every few years or so. Eventually it'll reach a steady state and those who can survive will and those can't will disappear.

And to answer OP's question about when the store will burst. Probably never I believe. The number of good apps will slow down, but the number of good apps currently. Even if no new apps ever came it would still be by far the best apps store out there for a looooog time. Of the apps I just mentioned, only 1 is on any other platform, and that would be a clone. I believe the ZuneHD copied PocketTouch so that would be 2. But, the number of exclusive apps without even a competitive one from another maker for another phone is mind blowing.
