We wouldn't leave our dog for more than about 12 hours without food or taking him outside. Water is always available with one of those auto-refill bowls with the big jugs on top.

If you are anywhere near 24 hours you do not deserve to own animals. Outside with food and water does not make a difference. I've had to do 12 before, daily it's about 9. Neighbors across the street left for 3 days and theirs got out of the yard. One was dangerous so animal control took it away. If you can't afford to board your dogs with someone who is going to watch them then don't go or don't own dogs at all.

Well depends on the pet. A dog I would agree, a cat less so, they tend to be perfectly fine for 24 hours maybe even more as long as they have food. If it's a regular thing though it might be harder on them.

When I'm gone "off schedule" my cat gets mad at me and literally yells when I get home lol. It's like a "WTF were you?" meow.

It looks like our dog would be alone for around 12-24 hours. We've decided to board it for the night at a place nearby.

Can't do any of the toilet tricks, our dog is like 6 inches tall, haha.

we'd leave the cat for up to a week at a time. automatic food, automatic water. i think she enjoyed sleeping in the bed without anyone knowing.

12 hours before it must be let out to relieve itself, and less for smaller dogs...unless you're okay with double potty training and floor pads.

And yeah, social/separation anxiety may be a problem. Cats are fine in this regard, but dogs should be given the chance to socialize, either with a sitter, hired walker, or kennel.

edit: Slightly different rules if the dogs are kept outside. They should still be walked though.

Given enough auto-dispensing food and water, and auto-cleaning cat litter boxes, I think most cats would be perfectly happy for months on end.

My sis has a small indoor dog that she leaves in a 3ftx3ft area for most of the day. She now lets it hang out with her in her room at night when she goes to bed after i bitched to her about it. But it's still basically locked up in that cage for 98% of the day when she's not sleeping or when we take it out to go pee/poo.
My sis never gives it any treats and only feeds it twice a day. She says it was recommended by her vet.
It fucking whines and barks all the time, and scratches at the caged wall to get out.
Is is inhumane?

my dogs have seperation anxiety from each other but not us, so when they are together, we will put down a lot of food and water and they are g2g for 3+ days since they have a dog door. old toy poodles. hell, they spend most of their time lounging around anyway so they probably wouldn't notice us being gone

seperate them and i wouldn't leave them alone for more than a couple hours max.
