How long do notebook hard drives last?

About how long does it take before I would need to replace my notebook hard drive because it died and is unusable?

How long do nb hard drives last? Usualy 3 years??

Mine was a 5400 rpm

I don't think you can put a time period on it, other than not as long as desktop drives.

I'm going on my 3rd year with my Dell and it's been dropped at least a dozen times - of course not while it was running.

We've had a problem with the IBM thinkpads where I work. The HD is in the front left, and people will pickup their laptop, and leave the lcd open, and carry it with one hand into a meeting. You have to clamp on to it to carry it one handed, and the spot they always carry it by is where the hard drive is. They actually squeeze the hard drive to where it can't spin.

My office of 150 notebook users sees a dead drive every month on average.

Notebook drives are smaller and can make alot of heat in a small and tight area, and because of this one would think they might not live as long. It's hard to say how long a notebook drive would last since I have one in my cellery 400 which has to be at least 5-6 years or more old and it's still working now too.

I have the exact same issue at my job. The T42 laptops have the HD in the worse place. I usually have to send a drive to data revocery about once a month. 8 out of ten times I can retrieve the data but occasionally I have to send them out. Thinner is NOT better IMO.

In ten years, I have had 5 laptops and at least 3 hard drives per - about 15 of them. Have never had one fail yet.

Heat is the biggest culprit for a laptop HD (hell, even a desktop). The drive's life is heavily dependent on how well it's cooled/how well heat is directed away from the drive.
