How long do you keep your laptop?

I bought an iPad and it was missing the important part: a keyboard. I tried the bluetooth keyboard. But that was exclusively for those who want to make work more difficult. Luckily both products had a good return policy.

I have been using my UX31a for at least 2 years now. I do not need more power. I will keep it until broken or battery is worthless. Before that I had a Sony VGN-Z for almost 4 years. I gave it to my younger sister. She says it stills works as it approaches 6 years of age. I answered 3 years, due to average ownership time of both notebooks so far: (2+4)/2. I still have a Sony FW490 but it is broken. Must have had that for 4 or 5 years, but I can't recall when it broke.

I own three laptops ... all from 2006-7 so I voted 6-9 years. If it ain't broke ... why fix it?

my hp elitebook has a 8 hour battery life with the extra extended battery pack which can be mounted along with the primary battery.

i only intend to replace it with another elitebook which can offer the same.

But my current one is about 7 years old.
Haven't required anything more powerful then it for laptop needs.

If i need something with more power, i'll bring out my ITX-Thin for something like a HD projector.

Being in that my laptop right now is my main computer (Currently trying to gather all the parts to finish my first build ) I've had this laptop for about 2 years (HP Pavilion). Previously it was a Dell Inspiron for 6 years until it began falling apart physically. If I wanted to hold the piece together...or had some SERIOUS bonding tape...I would actually still use that old Dell...it still runs and everything.

From my personal experience I can say that if a laptop is more than 4 years old its reselling price would be ridiculously low. So 4 years is my limit, but usually after 1,5 years of owning laptop, tablet, smartphone I am slowly trying to sell it at a reasonable price

My current ThinkPad X201 (i5 520) is about four years, and is still running beautifully. I replaced the HDD with an Intel X25-M 80GB when I bought it, and the memory was doubled to 4GB (which I've since doubled again to 8gb). It's used lightly, but every day, and has yet to have any issues (aside from a DOA SD card reader, which was fixed under warranty). I'll probably be using it for years still, but I'll probably get a new battery in a year or two. My previous laptop was an HP Touchsmart X2, which fell out of use after about two years due to horrible performance (and the early failure of one of the two batteries it came with) , and was given away to a friend after about three years.

I know people with gaming laptops (usually from alienware) with 5+ year old laptops who have the internals resembling nothing like what they were bought like XD. Does that count as 5+ years of keeping the laptop though?
