If they're running shoes, and you run in them, they will break down way long before they look like they've broken down. Save your knees; change the shoes every 6-9 months.
My shoes last quite awhile. I have been wearing a pair of Adidas cross trainers along with a pair of Vans for about a year and half. Yesterday I just went out and bought a new pair of Adidas, can't seem to find them on the Adidas site though.
I've had a pair of Adidas that I've used regularly for the past 15 months, but I don't use them for any kind of running anymore becuase they started giving me awful shin splints about 5 months ago when the sole padding wore out and the bottoms became smooth.
I dont run I bike mostly about 4-5 miles every nite with my roommate.
Can't see a problem in that! A marathoner friend of mine warned me about the shoe breakdown thing, and I think he's right. I do run and I change the shoes no less than 1x/year. Which simply means I've got a whole bunch of New Balances in the closet.
