I have read a lot of bad experiences with the 5x. I almost considered it until reports started coming in since I like smaller phones. What is it about the 5x that makes it so bad? The hardware specs look fine. Is it device drivers? A firmware update should fix that, is anything being done about it? Who would be responsible, Google or LG?

I'd like to know the answer to this too.. I liked the phone otherwise, but could have saved $200+ with a moto g and only missed fingerprint reader, camera IQ, and a few ms longer to open apps.

At this point I guess it's factory reset then try cyanogenmod

Let us know if CM works for you.

I really really wish the 5X had a solution. It is as cheap as $270 for the 16GB one on Ebay.

What review did you read that misled you? I am not saying you didn't read that, just wondering. Too many of these "mobile" sites are run by people who will only use an iPhone (*The Verge cough*) so they don't do the deep dive into the experiance needed to find problems that won't show up on the spec sheet. It is sometimes hard to know who to trust.

Probably my favorite journalist in Android right now is Russell Holly. He does very in-depth reviews and he was frank that people should have bought the 6P instead:

http://www.androidcentral.com/review-lg-nexus-5x

Droid Life also picked up on the bad performance of the 5x:

http://www.droid-life.com/2015/10/30/nexus-5x-review/

I sympathize with you though, there were a lot of bad early reviews. People just love to be Nexus cheerleaders even when the devices don't deserve it (*Nexus 9 cough*). I knew as soon as I saw "2GB of RAM" it was a dud personally. That is not enough RAM for an Android flagship.

I don't own the 6P either, it is too big for me. I am basically waiting around for either a crazy Galaxy S7 deal or for Google to release a Nexus 5P later this year. Right now the 5 inch segment (outside of the S7) just sucks. It isn't Android's fault, it is just a weird window of time when the devices the market is offering at 5 inches all suck.

If I had to get a phone right now (like mine broke) I would totally float by on some cheap 2014 Moto X until the market had something worth buying.

I think the problem is a lot of those issues don't really come up unless you evaluate long term usage AND you compare with another device. I doubt I'd be able to comment so critically on Android camera performance if I didn't have a work iPhone as well.

It really took like a month or so of using my 6P to find out all the quirks and issues, and even then I feel like I'm learning something every few days.

Features like OK Google don't work reliably honestly. I see it sometimes work on my 6P and sometimes it doesn't. Same with my gf's 5X. And even if it does, sometimes the phone lags where you say "OK Google" *wait 3 seconds* say "OK Google" again and it only then finally opens the initial query, and then performs a search for "OK google." Great.

I wonder if its drivers/firmware. The 5X has faster NAND than the 6P yet it feels like it lags so bad. I don't get it.

Wife switched from a 2014 Moto X to a Nexus 5X. Her experience for the most part has been positive. She gets those random weird crash that seem to happen once a week or every two. But I wonder if the OP's device might be defective? From my experience, Google is pretty good about taking returns and exchanges on their devices.

The 5X is lampooned in all reviews and is a no good phone, I hear. Ive never used one. AND it appears you got a bad one. This has nothing to do with the OS.

I have a T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 that still has Android 4.3 on it. Its 4 years old and in perfect working order. It doesnt crash, it has always been rock solid.

I bought my girlfriend a Moto g 2015 last September. Its recently been upgraded to Marshmallow, its working perfectly.

It's funny how Android needs as much ram as my Windows 10 tablet has, just to be smooth.

A phone should not need 4gb of ram. Android is a memory hog, period. It's apps are not much better.

My 2013 Moto X is still running great although the battery life doesn't seem quite as good. All the reason I needed to upgrade to the Moto X Pure.

From what I've read, the problem is the encryption. People who have turned off the encryption seem to get much better performance.

From all the reviews I've seen, the 5x just suffers from performance/lag problems. I have yet to see this with my 6P, which I've been using as my daily driver for 3 months.

I have a 10" android tablet, a cheap ass chinese one. It has 1gb ram and works great, is a year old with no problems.

The other phones I spoke of in an earlier post have 2gb each, again, never any issues.

Also, windows 10 tablets are kinda crap, imo.

I uninstalled Twitter and a couple of apps that were notification heavy. My 5x been okay for a couple of days now.
If it wasn't for this issue and the average battery life, I would keep this phone for 2 years or more. My S6 is sitting in my drawer, haven't been used in months. May go back to it if the freezing/long lag persists. Also will be keen on S7 reviews.

My windows 10 tablet has a Core m3 and 4gb ram. It's an HP Spectre x2.

My Android tablet with 1gb ram is completely unusable (well, before the battery died) and my replacement with 2gb ram is merely "Ok". It does "ok" for web browsing and "ok" for reading comics, but anything else is bleh. My Droid Turbo 2 does good with only 3gb ram.

I have had my 5x for about 3 months now and have no problems with lag thus far. The camera is a bit slow sometimes, but that's it really.

The windows tablet I have, to be fair, is a crappy 7' iView with 1 gb ram and a slow atom, so no surprise there. Yours is a good one.

But I happened to get lucky with the android tablet. Its a 10" Digiland DL1010Q 1gb ram mediatek chip. $69.99 new from best buy over 16 months old and working great.

Its really the device and not the OS. and luck lol

My new Android tablet is a Lenovo with a mediatek quad and 2gb ram. My old tablet was a tegra 2 with 1gb ram.

I used to have a Dell Venue Pro 8 running Windows 8.1 with 2gb ram. It was actually quite good. I ran really well with only 2gb ram and an Atom chip.

I have a dual boot Chuwi Hi8 tablet (Android/Win10) and I have to say, Android is certainly the better tablet OS. Win10 really is a regression (in terms of tablet functionality) compared to Windows 8, though the real pain point is the lack of apps.

On an old Galaxy S4 on 5.01.
Runs fine. No mods. No root. Just plain old stock with 64sd card slapped in.
No complaints. At the very least nothing about the phone has annoyed me in recent memory.
It did have some annoying habits back on kitkat. No problems on Lillipop.
