How long does it take for Google to list an image on Google search?

Hi,

Yesterday, I updated a website with an image that is linked to a name.

Though, when I google the name, the image doesn't come up under google images.

How long before Google indexes the image?

I find it really depends. Popular/high ranked sites will get content listed pretty damn fast, I've seen it happen in a matter of less than an hour. At least with regular content, don't know about images. For a less popular site it can take several days if more. Basically popular sites most likely get crawled more often and then the content it finds (such as link/images to other sites) will get indexed. There's probably all sorts of factors that play a role too and don't think any of those are really public.

Anyway to tell Google that when someone enters a certain string into its search field, they should bring up a certain image and URL as a search result?

No not that I know of. The way stuff is displayed is pretty much part of the algorothm and don't think they really WANT people to know as it could be abused.

I had an odd experience with this recently. I noticed that an image on my site was the first result for a particular query on Google, but the image was not relevant to the query. I think it was showing it because it happened to be the first image on the page, and the page as a whole is relevant to the query.

I replaced the image with a different one to see what would happen. I expected the search results in Google to reflect the change quickly, as both "Googlebot" and "Googlebot-Image" visit my site several times per day, but it actually took days before the results changed (and the new image isn't the first result anymore).

How does the whole thing work exactly? Does Google have software and hardware that just systematically sends out HTTP requests to IP addresses and then sorts though the HTML that the server returns?

There is the matter of "hits" how many times users clicked on that image with a certain term typed in.
