How long have you being waiting to build/upgrade a new system, and what are you waiting for?

With all the vapor around, I've been waiting for a whole year now

A year ago there was word that I would be able to upgrade my BP6 to PIIIs with a Neo powerleap adapter. The adapter was flawed and it took till last November for the VP6 to come out, while the Neo+ was still born.

By the time the VP6 came out, PIIIs were not a good choice anymore when compared to Thunderbirds. By that time also we found out also that DDR was not that big of a deal either.

So I started waiting for the 760MP. And I'm still waiting....

I know I could have gone to a single cpu system, but I got spoiled and so far I think the wait is worth it.

How'bout you? What are you waiting for?

Well, I want at least 50% improvement in gaming performance and realistsic gaming at 1600x1200. My last upgrade 1GHz Athlon GF2GTS64MB was in fall 2000. I am not going to buy any CPU nor vid card of the upcoming generation. I think that I will hold off untill fall again. I am very happy with my system right now. I used to upgrade twice a year, but the progress is not as fast now. I mean, going from 450MHz to 600MHz to 1GHz were big steps. I am not gonna get the same increase going to 1.2 or even 1.5GHz with comparable expense. One upgrade I've been dreaming of is UW SCSI160 with 10k or 15k drives, but it's beyond my budget. I want to see a lot faster RAM, bus, I/O subsystems not just CPu and vid card and 10k ATA100 drives.

i'm waiting to build a new system. u take a look at my pathetic specs (Quad Damage in sig) you'll see i have a bitchin' p166 mmx. YEAH!

i REALLY need to build a new comp. anyways, i've been genuinely waiting for about 3 months now, cuz it was 3 months ago that i decided i was going to build a new tbird system. however, because of family politics , i have to wait till june to build my box.

i'm waiting for the new amd core, the palomino and morgan. i'll see what those are about, and their prices in june.

I'm waiting until I get some money. I'm not a big gamer. So my PII400 and ATI Xpert 98 with 256MB of PC100 work well enough for me. I'm sure it'll be fun to build my next computer, though.

I want my next system to be a laptop of greater than 1.2 GHz. Preferabbly with DDR, that will be a while until that is available. A nice size screen too. It would also be nice if it was light . I'm probably going to wait another year to upgrade. I'm satisfied with my current Athlon Classic 650, Voodoo3 3000 and 320 megs of RAM (just got 64 megs free after rebate from CompUSA deal) .

I'm constantly modifying my systems -- replacing a component here and there -- most recently replaced the HP 7540 and 8110 CD-RW drives with an Iomega/Plexor 12/10/32 and a TDK 12/10/32. I consider it an upgrade when I replace MB and CPU and for that I am waiting until I can be assured 1Ghz at my stingy price. Not quite yet -- but getting awfully close.

Main reason I'm asking is that I'm getting nervous with the memory prices. I want to make up my mind before they climb back again.
Depending on the system I could buy a couple 512MB chips for near $300. I'm getting ansy, but I learned not to buy anything for the future. So I'm staying put, with my hand on my wallet

For you all people who are waiting,

New technologies come up every 2 months or so and there is no point in waiting. I have been waiting for a long time too. First, I waited for the adapter NEO plus to use with my BP6 which never made it to the market after the delays. Then I waited for T-bird DDR system which still have not become widely available to the market. So I bought myself a ABIT KT7A, pair it with a Duron 650 @ 975 MHz and dirt-cheap SDRAM. I am more than happy to say that I did not wait for DDR system as I have very fast system now.

Of course, waiting can be beneficial. I know a lot of people might be waiting for NV20 which are coming in 1 week's time. But then again, are you going to buy NV20 with a price tag of $599? Only idiots would buy it at that price. When the price decreases to about 200-300, you might then want to get your hands on NV20.

The system requirements for the latest softwares is about P2-300, 64 MB RAM and a few hundreds MB of HDD space. Therefore, if you have a system slower than a P2-300 and want to use a software that demands P2-300, then an upgrade would be good for you. If you have P3-600, don't even think upgrading to a 1 GHz system since the performance increase is small.

I haven't had a complete new system since my first 286.. always incremental upgrades.. my last major upgrade is swapping the Celeron 466 with the K7-600 with 3dfx V3-3000. that's almost a year ago.
and right now I'm mainly waiting for PC2100 stuff to arrive and see
what I can do. I'm also waiting for a new notebook, hopefully a K7 based notebook.

I'm waiting for the Athlon 1.0 gz processors to drop just a bit, to be coupled with the Abit KT7 mobo. I'll be replacing a 400 mhz Celeron, vintage 1998. That fact that I can make such a large leap shows you what kind of incredible price drops we've been seeing in recent months. I also need to upgrade my vid card, V3 3000, but it's hard to determine which route to go at this point.

Right now I'm waiting to see if there will be a KT266 board that has SDR-DIMMs and DDR-DIMMs.

I would like to get a board to go with a SocketA TBird, but I'd like to keep my 256MC PC133 Micron RAM for a while, and then get DDR266 (PC2100) later...

Also money...

I want:

Radeon 64MB Vivo
Samsung 900NF or 1200NF..but it costs almost 2x as much
TB Santa Cruz
BA4800
Win2k Pro
A TBird 900 I can clock up to 1200 (9x133=1200 )
An Asus KT266 board with SDR & DDR DIMMs

I have however very little money

I bought my PIII 450 system about 2.5 yrs ago. I've had to replace a hd and power supply in it. The mb shorted out the other day and instead of trying to add another component to it (this is my 8th system and first time I've ever had components go bad on me) I decided to just start over again and put together a new system.

I'm going w/ a Via KT133A chipset motherboard, Asus or Abit probably. I want a 266 bus T-Bird 1.1 or 1.2 ghz. etc etc

I think I've got the bug in the worst way. I have been pricing my next system for months now. See my website for the Excel spreadsheet of it all!

Anyhooo, I am primarily waiting for an AMD 760MP motherboard to **prove** itself with the other components I'd want to use. I don't like the idea of rushing and getting the first SMP mobo that drops.
