to me, the most ridiculous part of hockey is how fighting is part of it, and just results in a penalty. unless the sport is boxing, I think that is ridiculous. i hate hockey and probably will never like it.

Fighting is there as a 'outlaw justice' way to stop people from taking cheap shots and getting away with it... If you are afraid of the consequences of taking a cheap shot, don't take one on somebody. Besides the newfound wave of 'aggravators' and 'instigators' hockey has always had a gentleman quality to it that made the sport have a lasting fan appeal, and much more pride than 95% of sports out there. If somebody broke the 'gentleman code' then $hit would hit the fan for that player (ahem Claude Lemieux). I wish the wings would have been able to afford to take a penalty or two that game so McCarty or Shanny could beat the hell out of Ville Niemenen for making a run at Cujo 4-5 times this series... Any player that gets suspended for trying to intentionally injure a goalie, then within the first minute of his comeback game does THE SAME THING should be punished accordingly...

Who was that baseball player who died during practice? It was later blamed on the weight loss supplement?
Wasn't he on the Indians or Angels ? I can't exactly recall his name...
His name was Steve Bechler, and he was with the Orioles.

When anyone asks me about fighting in hockey, I just ask them to imagine skating around an ice rink with a few large guys bumping you constantly.

The frustration alone is enough of a reason to fight in hockey to me.

The reasons above are good ones why the league should allow it.

I see no problem with it. If you're in the NHL you know you're going to have fighting. Otherwise they wouldn't sign up, would they?

Let 'em fight. They are adults and they know what they are doing.

Bumping ? I'd say cross-checking, slew-footing, head-hunting, checking-from-behind, blind-siding, elbowing, kneeing... and that's just the list of illegal stuff. Nevermind the body contact that is allowed like when you finish a check on someone who just got rid of the puck and he isn't allowed to retaliate. Those are a bitch.

<-- lost a spleen because of a well-placed cross check

I disagree with both of those statements. When deflected, pucks can easily come up under the shield and make contact with the eye socket. Plus, just because they are professionals doesn't mean they know what they're doing. I'm not sure if you've seen a hockey game lately, but most of the sh!t that goes on you wouldn't expect from a group of teenagers. Violent stickwork, hits from behind, etc - it's not long before someone gets paralyzed from going head-first into the boards.

I can't believe noone has brought up Moore and Bertuzzi. That was horrible. Beruzzi was quite obviously responsible for breaking Moore's neck. This is why fighting is allowed; so you don't have to take cheap shots.

I have to agree with BigKev. It drives me insane that a lot of them don't wear shields. Sure it's manly now, but what about 10-15 years from now when they are driving to the grocery store and can only see out of one eye?

I guess my opinion (probably not a popular one) is that it should be mandatory for the rookies coming in and everyone after to wear shields. Like someone said earlier, they used to not wear helmets and now they do. And besides the kids coming in have probably worn shields all their life now. They wear the full ones in college, they wear them in highschool. They are used to playing with them.

That being said i would also like to say GO FLAMES!!! that game last night was awesome!
