Two pages. Top of 1st page has bulleted summary of accomplishments, education, and experiences. Everything else is most likely going to be looked over again if you're a serious candidate when they scan the 1st page in. Always use a nice laser printer and resume paper too.

Two pages, only because of 14 years experience.
format = a blend of executive and technical

Then you only cover the last 3 years or the most relevant experience. Any "gaps" can be covered in the interview or cover letter. Its not a god damn CV its a resume.

???

a resume should show a steady progression in ones career. Moving upward with more responsibility and more experience and more decision making abilities/direct reports. You do this by listing your jobs, what you did and displaying how you moved forward/promoted.

I dunno...if you flipped burgers or shoveled sh|t during a dry spell do you really want to put that on there?

I took a course on how to apply for a job or do your resume, I forget which... Anyways, the facilitator had like 5-6 pages of resume and swore by it.

Mine is 2 pages, I am applying for a job , not writing a book.

That being asked, how many years of experience do you have?

3 pages.. 18 years exp..

IT resumes can and should be as many pages as you need..

i used to think that the 1 page rule was correct but was told by MANY HR reps and VPs that the multi page rule does not apply to IT..
they want you to show when the last time you used particular skills on your resume..

I had it rewritten the way several recruiters and HR reps told me was best for them..

which is.. grouped by company list all skills used at that company and the dates they were used..
this uses alot of room but helps the HR rep decide who is a better fit in skills...

I agree. A one page got me my job, got my friend a job working as a database guy for PayPal, and got me an interview in the IT department at a local university.

THANK YOU for pointing that out to the people who are still in college getting the one page rule hammered into them.

Honestly, even then, it should be more than 1 page. I haven't even graduated yet (am in my 3rd year), but I have enough work experience to warrant a 2 page resume. If you make use of your summers when in school, you should have built up enough experience to break in to the second page.

Exactly how many summer jobs can you have by your third year? You do realize that once you start working meaningful jobs, you don't HAVE to put the crap high school jobs on, right? Most employers don't want two pages from someone who has just completed college, short of you being an honors student with all sorts of credibilities and credentials.

Just because I wasn't in college at the time doesn't mean it wasn't a meaningful job. Not everyone sits around doing nothing the summers while they are in high school.

I have not had a free summer, where I wasn't working professionally since around 10th grade.

I have always though too much importance is placed on resumes.

That is why mine is so cheap looking. Mine isn't fancy like any you will ever find online. Mine just list my employers and dates and that is it.

Does anyone think I am wrong for doing this?

1 page with the words refereneces available on request on the bottem. if i put solid references down, it'd be 2 pages easily.

That being said, I have a total of around 5 years experience in the industry. In job experience, I have a job I held for 2 summers, an internship I had for a summer, and a co-op I just did.

On my resume, I have my education, relevant course work, professional experience, technical skills, and leadership/achivements.

that's good and all, but I had just as much experience and I just have 1 page. When my resume got long, I lumped my leadership/achivements into 1 sections. The majority of your experiences overlap, and each bullet I have makes a separate point.

Also, I only put most recent jobs, and give it maybe 2-3 bullets, and pass experiences, if they are really important, I'll leave on, with at most 1 bullet. Making it 2 pages is ok, if you have the experience, like teh guy who had 10 years of experience, but from a college student, most people would expect only 1 pages, or else they think they are just trying to fluff up their resume. (This is what i heard from a recruiter). Now working in industry, I do not think I would want to read a resume from a new college grad that is more than 1 pages.

I use two versions, depending on the mood I am in. One is one page, the other (that I used most often) is a little over 1 and 1/2. Both without references.

Don't listen to anyone that truly abides by the "one page" rule.

Ultimately, it's the results that matter. Are you getting the opportunities you want? If so, who really cares about any superficial rules.

I've been offered a job at every opportunity I've ever pursued, and it never fails that someone along the way offers resume advice to me. Normally I'm one to entertain theory, but when it comes to resumes: do what works.

If you do get turned down for opportunities I would politely ask HR, the interviewer, or perhaps anyone else why you got turned down. Constructive advice is always welcome.

I'm in recruiting, so here's my guide.

Student - 1 year exp: 1 page
2-10 years exp: 2 pages
10+ years exp: 3 pages maybe

Exceptions are law and finance firms, who are more staunchly stuck on the one page rule.

Wrong? No. Will you get a ton of callbacks? No. A recruiter or hiring manager wants to see what you have experience doing, and just job titles and employers doesn't tell you that.

Well, I always cut it down to 1 most relevant page. If I were to list every school, every job, every skill, every certification, etc it would probably go on for 7 or 8 pages. Instead, I pick and choose what I think is most important for the particular position I am applying for.

ding ding. i think in finance, if you have >1 page resume you're looked down upon. consequently all the resumes i get, most of the people with no degree or went to a crap school have 2-3 page resumes, as where the more educated ppl have 1 clean resume with just enough information.

i mean really, i don't care what your first internship was back in college.
