My last employer once told me that's what team players do - always be or make themselves available to work OT, period. That lead to long days for me, lots of stress, and a serious dislike of the job and near burnout.
The downside of that is that it will always be expected from you once you start doing it.
Now I have a 40-hour work week, no overtime encouraged or even needed for that matter, and when my work is done for the day, I can go right on home (whether it's at noon or my usual end time of 4:30) and still get the full 40 in pay.
Love it. Nearly no stress, work I enjoy, and get plenty of time for my wife and recreation.
