I've got a 40 gb 7200 rpm drive with approximately 30 gigs full. I plan on doing monthly or bimonthly backups to an 80 gig 5400 rpm drive.

How long do you think this would take if the drivers were in the same box?

and how long if the backup drive was in another machine linked by some crossover cable across 10/100 NICS?

Anybody do anything like this before...backing up to a slow drive?

One word of avice... Ghost. You can clone a 40 GB drive in about 15 minutes.

So just use Norton ghost then? Any idea on how big the ghost image of a 40 gigger would be?

I've got Norton Ghost 2002 and haven't used NG for a long time. Actually, I will be needing to back up 40 gig hard drives onto an 80 gigger. This is why I'm curious as to the space requirements. One of these will be coming across 10/100 cards as well....I was thinking of using the backup utility in 2k as I have been backing up my c drive this way..

What's the best way to backup my HD's this way?

It takes about 6.5 hours to back up a full 30Gb of data on my companies server on a DD4 tape every night. It all depends on your method.

maybe if they were both in the same pc. across network 100mbs would probably get you about 5mbs on an average drive.

Thanks for the scoop guys. I think I will use ghost since I will be backing up the system partition as well and as far as I know xcop or xxcopy doesn't retain the boot sector info and space on the hard drive.
